Any suggestions on the upgrading the stock engine in the performance area? I somehow have $1500 and some change to work with.

I'm considering a Renegade with a '85 fuel pump. Where to go from there with had me wondering options...(I already have new plugs and MSD wires for a good tune up.)

Thanks,

;)

I bought the renegade and still waiting for it.:confused You could go to a low rear gear 3.54 or 3.73 if you do alot of highway driving like me go for the 3.54 gears, and a NOS system, There was an article in gm high tech performance a while back with a guy with an 84 crossfire and he added 1.6 roller rockers, 3.73 rear gears and a nitrous setup and he ran a best of 11.8 in the 1/4 mile. I think he said he spent about $2000. That is one serious crossfire, the rest of the car is stock.

Or you could just buy a bunch of crap like I did and get a small gain:
ADS chip
180 temp stat
underdrive pulleys
K&N filter
random catylitic converter
shift kit
walker rear y pipe
muffler eliminators
air pump replacement pulley

on the shelf waiting for my renegade:
2 inch throttle bodies

I am going to add the renegade and see what that does, if not much gain will install NOS. I have an 85 vette also and I would rather keep my 84 basically stock and mod the 85.

Get your self a set of vortec heads, single 2bbl. holley tbi for a 87-89 chevy p/u, vortec intake manifold, mild street cam ( for torque)roller cams are good but can be alittle $$. You can get a vortec tbi intake or a vortec carb. intake (but you'll need an adapter). I don't know how much hood clearence 82s have (mines an 84), I had to use a open element air cleaner, but I had to shorten it to about 2''. I think it was orignially 14x 2.5''. I cut the filter down, layed a thick bead of rtv on the lid, set the cut side in the rtv & let it dry. You can't tell it was altered, I used a K&N filter.
Anotherthing you could do for an air filter on a single 2bbl. tbi is try a kit from Spectre, they make the hats for carbs/tbi (single or dual air filters) & the tubes, elbows, &filters.
This is the way to go if you don't want to port you manifold, some say porting has really helped, while others say don't bother. Basically what your doing in this swap is giving yourself many more intake options. You can't use a stock crossfire intake w/ vortec heads. You can use any intake/head combo if it clears the hood. The 2bbl. tbi allows this.
If you need an egr valve for emission testing, then you'll have to run an external tube to the intake (like 86 & up vettes have them). Look on the thread about crossfire mods requiring no ecm mods. You'll see what I did, I did'nt go w/ vortec heads b/c 1. emission testing here, the egr deal 2. lighter aluim. heads 3. back then they didn't many votec intakes to choose from.
Otherthings you'll have to keep in mind is fuel lines, throttle brackets (your existing cables should work, mine did) breather filter, ect. If you have done intake swaps before, then you should be alright to do this.

What cam would you recommend for an 85 vette with vortec heads vortec tpi intake and a superram? my 85 is a flat tappet so what would work best, is there a vortec flat tappet cam?;shrug

Competition Cams in Memphis has a zillion Chevy grinds, and was big into mid eighties Vettes back in the day. I'll bet they can recommend the right grind with whatever variables you may have. I haven't dealt with them in a while - I hope they're still willing to help like they used to. I got a cam and lifters from them for my 87 when I was racing it - the difference was really worth the expense.:thumb I think I'd spend my money on cam, kit, lifters and modified throttle body (I'm back on the original post - not your 85)...but that's just me.
