Help! Surging hot idle stabilizes when front O2 sensors are disconnected

Thanks. I think I'm going to give up and take it to a local repair shop.

Help! Surging hot idle stabilizes when front O2 sensors are disconnected

Have a FSM. Doing the best I can without a scan tester. I agree it's probably not two bad sensors.

Help! Surging hot idle stabilizes when front O2 sensors are disconnected

I'm troubleshooting my 1996 with surging idle in closed loop operation. It's an LT1 with 50k miles. The idle is smooth and normal when cold and in open loop mode. When the engine is hot, the idle will run at about 600 rpm and surge intermittently to about 900 or 1000 rpm and then come back down...

Help! Surging idle speed after water pump replacement.

I haven't posted in quite a while, but I've since checked the EGR for movement with a vacuum change and it seems ok. Vacuum hoses have been double-checked and appear ok. I have a friend with a code reader, and we found no engine codes showing. One thing that I've noticed, though, is that if I...

Help! Surging idle speed after water pump replacement.

John - was that O2 sensor in front of the catalytic converter or behind it?

Help! Surging idle speed after water pump replacement.

What happened is that I could NOT remove the old O2 sensor. Bank 2, sensor 2 is nearly impossible to access. I dropped the catalytic converter a couple inches to gain better access to the sensor, but it wouldn't budge, even after repeated soaking with PB Blaster, tapping lightly, etc, etc, etc...

Help! Surging idle speed after water pump replacement.

I just took it out on I57 to run for 30 minutes steady speed, and the Service Engine Soon light came on after about 15 minutes at 70 mph. Ran it past my local Autozone, and they checked the code for me: P0160 - O2 sensor, bank 2, sensor 2. They had a replacement, so I bought it and will put it...

Thanks, John. I'll check those grounds out tonight.

Help! Surging idle speed after water pump replacement.

Again, thanks for the help! In answer to Hib's question, the check engine light has not been on at all. I did clean up the ground connections on either side of the engine last night, but I could not find the one under the right side fuel rail cover that the FSM shows bolted on the front near the...

Help! Surging idle speed after water pump replacement.

Thanks for the responses. I do have the water pump temperature sensor connected, and I can't see any vacuum hoses or connectors loose or missing. It's very hard to see the vacuum hose on the bottom of the opti, though. I looked with an inspection mirror and it appears to be on OK. After browsing...

Help! Surging idle speed after water pump replacement.

Hello - I just replaced the water pump, distributor cap & rotor, and serpentine belt on my '96 LT1, and now the idle speed is surging from 500 rpm up to 800 or 900, and then back down again. The idle speed is steady upon cold startup, and begins to surge once the engine is hot. I've checked and...

    My first Corvette - a 1996 CE

Thanks for the welcome. I see you're an Instrument Engineer from Portage - I'm an Instrument Maintenance supervisor from Highland. I moved to Illinois 27 years ago to work at a nuke.

    My first Corvette - a 1996 CE

Finally, at age 53, after admiring Corvettes since I was in grade school, I purchased my first. It's a 1996 Collector Edition LT1 with a red interior and 47k miles. I bought it about a month ago, and I love it more every time I drive it. I have a lot to learn about how to take care of it and...
