I'm with you...I always find the 80-82 model years grab my attention - I think it is the subtle morph that is going on as the C3 ends and the C4 begins. Pretty high on my wish/fantasy list of a growing Corvette collection.
If the transmission seems to be performing properly, I suggest that you first rule out any noisy catalytic converters. With the vehicle sitting, engine off, tap the cats and see if you can re-create the noise.
