Ok, we're reaching the end of my knowledge on this subject. I thought one of the "experts" would have dropped in by now. Do the dampers work? In other words; in defrost mode, air goes to the windshield; in heat mode, air goes to the floor and in AC or vent, air comes out the dash outlets.
I think there is a resister assembly that is used to vary the fan speed. (I can't swear that the Corvette uses this method, but I've replaced it in other GM cars.) If the fan speed doesn't increase each time the switch is incremented, that is likely the problem. If the fan speed increases but...
I'm assuming you don't have the electronic climate control.
When you change the fan speed switch between settings, can you hear the fan change speeds? Does it behave the same way in both heat and AC modes?
I don't know about the clunk, but the whine sounds like it could be the normal ABS calibration routine. After starting the car and backing up the ABS will recalibrate itself. When it does this it sounds like a whine coming from behind the drivers seat.
There aren't any speakers in the dash on the '88. Someone in this forum explained about the speaker grills in the dash one time, but I don't remember the story. There is one speaker in each door and two in the rear compartment.
Try Premier Upholstery. They advertise in our club newsletter and I've heard they do good work. I haven't personally tried them yet, although I do plan to talk with them about some repair work I need done.

An interesting problem. I don't have any more ideas right now. ;shrug What's happening with the fuel pressure will be a key piece of information. You might also monitor the voltage to the fuel pump to make sure it's getting power when it's supposed to. I'm assuming you have plenty of fuel in...
Monitor the fuel pressure like Tom said. It sounds like the fuel pump relay may not be closing.
When the key is turned on the fuel pump will run for two seconds to fill and pressurize the fuel system. After the car starts the fuel pump relay will close to turn the fuel pump on. The relay is...
When I replaced my second alternator in a year, the guy in the parts store adivsed me to spend the extra money for the AC rebuild and not go with the store brand rebuild. I did that and haven't had a problem in the six or seven years it's been in.
My Makita impact driver is my favorite tool. It's a great power screwdriver. You can run screws with it all day long and it doesn't jerk your wrist around like a regular power driver. And it's great for breaking small screws and bolts loose, like the distributor cover , license plate bolts...
The anniversary car came with the Z52 sport suspension package. It has 11.5 inch rotors front and rear.
Check out the Tech Center button at the top of the page. Lots of good information there.
When mine did this, I ended up replacing the injectors. Put a fule pressure gauge on and see if the pressure bleeds down right after shutting the car off. If the pressure starts dropping right away fuel is probably leaking through one of more faulty injectors resulting in flooded engine condition.
It is illegal in MN to have any kind of a cover over the plate. However, you see a lot of cars with them on. You didn't happen to be down by Red Wing did you? The State Patrolman down there has a thing about license plates. He once pulled a car out of the middle of a line of about 20 Vettes...
