    I bought it new

It's all good. I don't think anybody is upset. I've been working on carbs for 35 years. I've used and rebuilt Holleys, Carters, Quadrajets, Mikunis and innumerable oddballs, and the E4ME that came stock on '81 Corvettes are the highest quality, most precise and efficient units I have ever...

    disable computer

Perhaps I was a bit abrasive in my first response. What problems are you having that you feel could be best fixed by replacing the carb and distributor and doing away with the computer? God bless, Sensei

    disable computer

If you want to downgrade, all you have to do is buy an aftermarket carb and a standard HEI distributor and install them. The only question left is why would you replace the best street carb on the planet and a completely reliable and stable timing devise with inferior units. God bless, Sensei

    Fuel Line Removal

The best way to get a stubborn fuel line off the carb is with a 1" open end wrench on the filter housing and a vise-grip locking wrench on the nut. The Original™ Locking Wrenches - Tools - IRWIN TOOLS God bless, Sensei

    Question: Exhaust Manifolds

Yes, they are stainless. I may have one in the attic. I replaced mine several years ago with ceramic coated. One of the originals had rotted out where the primary tubes come together. I know I threw that one away, but I may still have the other one. God bless, Sensei

    Exhaust To Manifold Bolts

They are probably not worth saving. They are just bolts, replace them from the hardware store. If you want to be cool, spent a couple of extra bucks and go with stainless. God bless, Sensei

space between airco and coolant tank?

On mine, it looks like about 1/4" (.5 cm) between the bottom of the coolant tank and the low side A/C port. God bless, Sensei

    Dwell and choke question

To do it right, I would think you would have to block the wheels, but I'm not sure it is all that critical. God bless, Sensei

    Question: 81 won't start

If the car bellows black smoke and does not throw a code, that in itself tells us something. The CCC system is probably not functioning correctly. Do you get the self diagnostic code? (I think it is 12, it just says the system is working) Does the check engine light come on when you are starting...

Question: What are the symptoms when your well plugs are leaking?

I agree. Also, well plug leaks are more common in earlier Q-jets. By the time of the E4ME, most of the bugs were worked out. If you do have a significant well plug leak, you can smell gas on your dipstick. God bless, Sensei

    Question: 81 won't start

I would not just go out and hand that carb to someone without first confirming it is the problem and second, confirming they know what they are doing (they will all tell how they rebuild these carburetors that were used on Corvettes for only one year almost 30 years ago all the time). After a...

Question: How long should it take for the engine to warm up?

No, not even close. You need to set your choke up properly. Look at this: http://www.corvetteactioncenter.com/forums/l81-vette-registry-forum/112943-your-car-cold-blooded-mine.html God bless, Sensei

    Question: 81 won't start

If you have spark and fuel it should fire. If the computer is down, or the carb's MC solenoid is non-functional it will cause the car to run very rich and foul the plugs quickly. Also, if the carb's fuel-tight integrity is compromised (porous casting, leaking well plugs, or far more likely...

    Question: 81 won't start

After 17 years, I would say the carb would need to be rebuilt. I assume you have confirmed that all your electric work is producing spark. God bless, Sensei

    Question: Timing and idle?!?

Your mileage is obscene! With everything set stock you should get around 15-16 in town if all is working correctly. I get 17 in town and 23 on the highway with near 400 hp using the original computer and carb (highly modified) The carb could be the problem, but you need to know what you are...

    U-Joint Strap Bolts

The six points will work fine and you don't need a 12 point socket. God bless, Sensei

    Question: TCC Problem

I answered your PM with how the system works and how I would proceed, but I did not mention how to install a manual switch. Just put a SPST mini switch (Radio Shack) in the power wire going to the brake pedal switch (where you would connect the constant 12V if the computer is giving intermittent...
