Are you talking about half shaft or drive shaft u-joints? Some back and forth play on the drive shaft is ok. whats not ok is sideways play.

Usually the joints go bad because they dried up. If they had grease in them, and they were still moving freely, they were most likly OK. Im with you, mark everything, and pass on the alignment.

I did not replace my opti when I replaced the leaking water pump a couple months ago either. It starts and runs fine, just like it didnt before replacing the leaking pump.

I agree with tyrel, $1000 and the car is still not fixed, your way past due for a new mechanic. I would have guess fuel pump, if its electric. They have been know to heat up and fail. But no need to guess, there are ways of testing these things. Good luck in your search. :)

My flowmasters are painted black. It was painted when I got it, 18 months ago. It is holding up very good, and I think looks good to. Gives it a finished look.

I dont thing fuel pump, or opti. Both would have given more notice before they failed. Whatever the repair, I hope its wallet friendly. :)
