    25 years old today. . .

Hey fellow L81ers, According to my build sheet, the car pictured in the upper left of this post turns 25 today! Yes, one of the last of the first run at Bowling Green, it is over a full year newer than Bill and Gail's. It's not the same 2 tone red it left the factory with (like JU's) or in the...

    Stereo lost all power

There should be a wire going from the radio to the fuse box, it likely has a 'pull apart' connection with a fuse inside. Its just a little 'push-twist-pull' with a little cylindrical (round) fuse inside it. Not sure if your '76 will have those fuses in the box, or the plug-ins. (waaaay up under...

    Spark plug recommendation

It's an ongoing difference of opinion. . . It sounded like you wanted to know what AC plugs to run, I would have suggested asking for plugs for the '66 396 at the parts counter, unless your 454 has electronic ignition, which probably uses a wider plug gap. For the record, what plugs were you...

    who works on their vettes?

I am building a tractor from scratch, just as you described. Mostly Chevy, with a Ford front axle and a Dodge gas cap! It'll probably be the last thing I ride in just before the hearse. . . Craig

    Small problem

I think that's a pretty good assumption. The switch in most cases is a variable resistor to control the speed of the intermittent wipers, if it doesn't shut off, it is probably stuck open. Does it run on high the whole time, or does it slow down when you turn them off? Craig

    block numbers?

Thanks Tom, and all others here with the 4-1-1! (information #) I did look on that site before, but didn't find the right section. I, like many of you, have a pile of (engine) parts in the back of the garage, and after so many I years forget what came from where - except the 4 bolt block! Thanks...

    Stereo lost all power

Dear Mr. Kent, An aftermarket stereo most likely has a fused hot lead, check to see if it blew. Other than that, check the fuse box where it wires in. Either way it sounds like a fuse to be completely dead. Is anything else not working besides the stereo? Craig

    block numbers?

Can anyone tell me of a source for info on Chevy engines other than Corvettes? They are all well documented here, but I can't find stamp pad info on other models. I've found Mortec has all the casting numbers listed, but no stamp pad suffixes. Any ideas? Thanks! Craig

    Setting solid lifters

Thanks again John! I knew it was something like that, but I didn't think I had it quite right on second look. I'll get them adjusted tomorrow after work, it's all coming together now. What exactly is the '30-30' cam? Thanks again. Craig

    who works on their vettes?

So far it's been all me (except for alignment) I have 2 friends who have done it all, should I get into unfamiliar territory, and all the good people at the CAC for needed advice. The garage that works on the Monte get $55/hour, that's pretty good incentive to do one's own work. Craig

    Setting solid lifters

Hey John, Cam is Isky gear driven (.531L, 290D) with roller solid lifters, stock rockers. Craig

    Setting solid lifters

Can someone remind me of the procedure for setting solid lifters? I think it is - #1 @ TDC, set #1 and #6, rotate 90 deg., set #8 and #5, rotate 90 deg., set #4 and #7, rotate 90 deg., set # 3 and #2? .020 with feeler gague between the rocker arm and valve stem? Did I remember all that right...

    what to do?

Wow, sweet! As far as I know, you can't do anything like that in PA. If you buy a car here (in state) you need to get the title transfered and plates on it before you can drive it. I trailered mine home, (from MD) then applied for title, (paid the sales tax) did some work to get it to pass...

I just got mine today, way cool! You must have known what size my melon is (7-1/8) as I didn't even have to adjust it. Thanks, Big 'E'!! Craig

    305 Heads

Hey Scratch, Did you get the casting numbers off of the heads? I looked through Mortec's listings, and some are a digit different between a 305 and 350. The main difference in heads is combustion chamber size. (that and newer heads being 'vortec') They all bolt up the same, and if you increase...

    spark plug replacement

I have yet to even look at mine, but what I've been told is 'front two from the top, back two from the bottom' My mom had a 73 when I was a kid and my dad got to do a lot of stuff to it, I remember hearing a whole lot of complaining after the spark plug experience! Craig

    L81 Registry Milestone

Thanks much to Bud and Tim, I'm just as proud to be a member of the 1981 Corvette Registry as I am to be a member of the North Central Corvette Club of PA! BTW, is it ok that I refer to my BG 81 as an '81-1/2'? After all, it was the 'second run' made in October of '81 - it's more than a year...

    OT Question re a 307

307 and 283 have the same bore (3.875) - 327 and 350 have the same bore (4.00). 383 is the latter bored .030 with a 400 crank. (4.030 x 3.75) 305 is completely different from all above. Hope this helps. Craig
