I'm getting ready to put the differential back in the 71. When I put the drain/fill plug back into the carrier it only screws about half way in. It's NOT cross threaded. Is this normal? I used to work in the pit at one of those fast lube places and we did differential changes all the time...
Cee,
Sent you a PM. Gonna have to order this stuff today. Left you my cellular. I'd be happy to buy the Metal Ready and Solvent from you. I need to buy some of the Marine Degreaser too I think. Give me a call. If I don't hear from you I'm going to have to order from them today to make...
I know, I know, :upthumbs you said it first and I agree. I just wanted to give you a chance to say I told you so and give me a chance to look at your Avatar again. Besides, now not only do I have your word for it I've also seen it for my own two eyes. I should move to Missouri, you always...
Thanks. I combined a number of suggestions to get going on the tank. I flushed it with soapy water and let the water run in the tank while I removed the bolts around the filler neck to remove. I then knocked the sending unit out and drained the tank. Once drained I used my shop vac to suck...
Not sure if they're a sponsor here or not but just sent mine out to www.bairs.com . They just got back today but I won't get to see them until tomorrow. Nice guys, fast service, I expect good work too. I'll know for sure tomorrow. Ask for Brian.
Bob,
Thanks. I completely understand the "bomb" statement. In fact that's what prompted me to start this thread. My current thoughts are to fill the tank with soapy water and work on it while it's full of water. What I was hoping for was a solution that would allow me to rinse the tank...
Thanks everyone. The tank is no where near failure. Buying a new one is kind of a waste. It just has some surface rust on the outside and a small amount of surface rust on the inside. (By small amount I mean you can just see a very thin line of discoloration/rust where the tank was left half...
Well I found out where the gas smell was coming from my 71. Since I had the rear end out of the car I pulled the tank. Wasn't any rust through or bad hose lines. It appears it was the gasket around the filler neck. I didn't find it until I tipped the tank over to drain the last half gallon...
The good news is the car is a 71 without smog (it's the ac/4spd/low hp 350). I've seen some TBI kits and then more elaborate SFI. What I'm hoping for is the reliability of a modern FI like, I have now in my Z06 and had in my C4. But as the post above notes $2-3K for FI when a new carb will...
Hey Gary,
I'm sending them to Bairs. I spoke with the owner. He made me very comfortable. They're going to bake the parts to get the grease out, shot peen the steel parts, 2 part epoxy, and paint the steel parts or leave them alone depending upon my preferences for NCRS. They'll set the...
Now that the rear end is out of the car and the transmission looks like it's next I'm thinking I better consider the replacement motor now for planning. I've decided I want to try and have a fuel injected crate motor. It will make starting a lot easier for my wife and give some good gas...
Hey Bill,
Yeah the seal needs to be replaced. Yes it's a 4speed. I wasn't aware there was a special tool. If anyone has info on such a tool I'd appreciate it. I'm going to take a stab at it tomorrow.
By the way. I finally gave up on the idea of doing the trailing arms myself. After...
I'm in marketing so I always like a headline that draws readers. Not sure what the title says about the people who clicked the link though:L
I found a link to a company that sells you the spindle knocker tool. Insert your own joke here... then takes the tools back and refunds most of the...
Coupeman,
Can you explain the backing plate? I'm assuming you mean for the rear bearings. and how to cut out the Ujoints? I thought you just press them out?
Thanks,
Whiplash
Hey Coupeman,
The pictures must not come out that well. Blow them up. They were a handful of eaten acorns that some rodent must have brought there and eaten. ;)
There were only 4 bolts with washers holdind the diff to the crossmember and they were all easy to get out with impact wrench...
Well I've been ripping out the trailing arms and rear end on my 71. Thanks Bill75, Coupeman, and Cee for the advice.
Got the trailing arms out last weekend and pulled the differential and crossmember today. For a little humor thought you'd all appreciate the "loose nuts" I found in the...
Hey Cee,
Yes I'm going to drop it with the crossmember. Don't see how else to get it out other than the "trick" some mention about cutting the fiberglass in the trunk to get to the top bolts. Needless to say... NOT cutting the fiberglass.
The chains are a good idea. I also read about a...
Hey Cee,
Happy New Year. I may just take you up on that offer. I'm in research mode right now and if you've done this before the help would be great. You know me. I'm not afraid to tackle the job. I just like to have all the facts and the right tools.
I'm going to drop the differential...
