My 99' C5 Coupe did the same thing. It was the fan motor bearing.

I had the same problem with my wife's 04 Suburban. I soldered it back on also. Yes, a clean surface does the trick. I also made sure to use a heat sink to protect the glass.

My recommendation is for 91 octane minimum. At 10.5:1 compression, this is the minimum you should be using to prevent any chance of detonation. Also, ethynol lowers the octane content. Around here they use 10% ethynol, not as much as the midwest, but it does not help in the octane department.

Did you check the glovebox? I believe there might be a shut off switch that uses your ignition key. I'm not sure I may be thinking about another C5 I've had.

There are a few things you can do to drop the temp. For me I have high compression 12.5:1 so I use the 160 degree thermostat and bring the fans on at 180 degrees. This gives me alittle extra protection against detonation. On a hot day I run between 175-185 degrees. Another thing I did was...
