Put the slide in the unlock position and grab it with your fingers and give it a tug. If it is stubborn use pliers and protect the lock with a rag. It pops right off.;)
I would start by checking timing and compression on all cylinders. Next step is check the fuel pressure. By the symptoms you describe it does not sound like a tranny problem. How long has it been since you replaced the fuel filter?
Sometimes the rear brake calipers can make a noise. It sounds more like a click. Sometimes they get a little sticky, especially if the car has been sitting a long time in storage.
You can buy a new liner on Ebay. Follow the directions. You have to completely strip off the old liner or it wont hold. Did mine about a year ago and it still looks like new.
How hot is the motor running. It is common for debris to get in the air passage in front of the radiator and restrict flow. Next you might want to have the charging system checked. If you are overcharging the battery it can cause issues with the computers.

Check his bypass. Did he just use a resistor? Is it soldered or is the wire just twisted together? Check the connection. You can get a new key at the dealership.
Check your air filter. Make sure there are no restrictions on the air box intake, like leaves or paper or other garbage. Hope it is that simple for you!

It might be time for new injectors. Even if the ohms test checks out good they can have bad O rings. I had this problem on my 92 and replaced them with Bosch injectors. What a difference!
