    just quit

I assume that when you unplugged the distributor connector that the car ran well enough to get home, but when it is plugged in it wont run at all -- seems like the HEI ignition module.

1981 Corvette ECM vs engine mods

My thoughts on HP for a 1981 -- ranked by cost (HP numbers are just guesses -- would love to hear other peoples opinions) The 1981 has about 190 HP stock, and the 1/4 mile times of low 15 seconds bears that number out. Improvements go like this 1) true duals and high flow or no catalytic...

1981 Corvette ECM vs engine mods

There is no adverse effect on the transmission, I think 1981 was the first year for the lockup torque converter, all earlier years didn't lock up normally You will only see mileage difference if you do a lot of highway driving ( only time it really locks up) and it should only be a couple...

Question: L-81 Registry , I do not have all the information

A little off topic, sorry. I was wondering if there is any way that the L81 registry can ask if the car still has an operational factory ECM/CCC. I would love to know how few of them there are left (I am one!)

1981 Corvette ECM vs engine mods

Yes, the only thing you have to do to get rid of the ECM in an 81 is to go to a non computer controlled carb and a vacuum advanced distributor The only thing left is the torque converter will no longer lock up at speed. Slight hit on gas mileage. Many have done it.

    Important! Base timing on 81

You don't need a scan tool for the 81 vette, Follow the instructions below to see if you can read any tools. The computer will not go into closed loop operations if the temperature sensor is broken BUT, the car will run fine in open loop. It runs full rich, you will get horrible gas...

The way the factory meant for'em to be

Mine is BONE stock and runs great. Drove it about 300 miles to carlisle and it ran great and got nearly 20mph (it did throw a code 44 "Lean") Also, I never got the dwell to be 30 at idle, but I keep trying to find out why! Long Live the 1981 CCC Corvette, the ugliest small block ever...

Video: Demo on what the dwell meter needle looks like adjust air metering valve on E4ME

I can't play the video. What a great job you did on the engine. Not many people would keep an 81 so original. But I really appreciate your efforts. Did you pull the engine to detail it or for some other reason. I think I am going to start pulling my engine tomorrow?

Help! 81 check eng stays on key off

I was serious when I gave you advise that you summarily dismissed. You are randomly changing parts based on no discernible logic. If you are going to continue to randomly change parts for a problem that is obviously a short or a bad ground -- go ahead. If you don't want to listen to advice...

Help! 81 check eng stays on key off

But the alternator is consuming no power, the light bulb is. You are simply reading the battery voltage at the alternator. Which when the key is off, is wrong! You changed the solenoid on the starter, the ignition switch, removed the ecm, changed the carb, but you wont remove a light bulb. I...

Help! 81 check eng stays on key off

You have NO ECM in the car and the check engine light is still on, that's interesting. You changed the ignition switch because of this -- that's interesting also. The quickest fix -- remove the light bulb!!!! If you have a disconnected light that is lighting there is Only two possibilities...

    May Need Rebuild

Great! Glad it is running again. It is great you left the ccc in it with that much hp. Shows the CCC haters that the CCC setup can handle a lot of performance upgrades. If you are ever in md, I would love to feel what 290 hp feels like. Good luck in the future:)

    Idle issues

Well, I have NEVER been able to get the Dwell to reach 30 on either carb. It gets to about 24 and seems to stall there. I did richen the idle screws and got the car to idle at 900 rpm, about 700 rpm in gear, but it still skips more than I would like. The off idle performance is still...

    Idle issues

I just rebuilt an E4mE (1981 CCC carb). Put it on the car, started right up, choke engaged , fast idle perfect, kicked off when it warmed up then stumbled and died, increased the idle speed, 1100 out of gear, 900 in gear and it idles pretty good (a small skip every 5 seconds). Took it out on...

    Question: Dual Exhaust Install Question

Read my update about the sound!

I Forgot what a PITA is to deal with ignition wire's heat shields :/

I try to keep th 81 as original as possible, so when I put new wires in mine I routed them in all the shields. What a PIA! Took hours, had to drop the starter. But it is all sorted now I also put the distributor shield back on, it had disappeared before I bought the car, and now I know why...

    Question: Dual Exhaust Install Question

I was always suspect of my original cat restricting the flow and hp of my 81. Wanted to put a dual exhaust but I was worried about spending the money for little increase in performance. To check to see if i would gain anything, I removed the cat and poked a huge hole in it. Instantly the car...

    ECM Code 24 Question

The Speed sensor is a rotating mirror behind the speedo that is rotated by the speedo cable. There is a light and a sensor mounted to the back of the speedo. When the mirror passes the light it reflects back to the sensor and the ECM counts the number of times a second the sensor sees the light...

    ECM Code 13 Question

So what is the code now? If the check engine light comes on, check the code. The ECM codes will help to find the problem.

    May Need Rebuild

wow -- like loosing an old friend. If you need to replace it -- the 1981 corvette will never be a top dollar car (Lets hope I eat those words someday!) So do whatever makes it more fun -- a reasonable price crate motor will sure add a lot more power.
