Yes, the only thing you have to do to get rid of the ECM in an 81 is to go to a non computer controlled carb and a vacuum advanced distributor The only thing left is the torque converter will no longer lock up at speed. Slight hit on gas mileage. Many have done it.

You don't need a scan tool for the 81 vette, Follow the instructions below to see if you can read any tools. The computer will not go into closed loop operations if the temperature sensor is broken BUT, the car will run fine in open loop. It runs full rich, you will get horrible gas...

You have NO ECM in the car and the check engine light is still on, that's interesting. You changed the ignition switch because of this -- that's interesting also. The quickest fix -- remove the light bulb!!!! If you have a disconnected light that is lighting there is Only two possibilities...

The Speed sensor is a rotating mirror behind the speedo that is rotated by the speedo cable. There is a light and a sensor mounted to the back of the speedo. When the mirror passes the light it reflects back to the sensor and the ECM counts the number of times a second the sensor sees the light...

So what is the code now? If the check engine light comes on, check the code. The ECM codes will help to find the problem.

wow -- like loosing an old friend. If you need to replace it -- the 1981 corvette will never be a top dollar car (Lets hope I eat those words someday!) So do whatever makes it more fun -- a reasonable price crate motor will sure add a lot more power.
