    84 corvette stalling issue

Bob, does your car have any modifications to the engine, or are we talking about a stock CrossFire? Is this a new problem, or has any work been done recently on the engine? How long have you owned the car? This is your first post in ten years? Sounds like that '84 must be treating you...

    Relay!!!!!!!!!!

Tony, it would have been good if you had informed us that this '84 had been converted to a carb, and that the wiring is a mess. You'll need to go back to basics to sort out these problems. You have several things that are causing your mysteries, and the primary one is that the person who did...

    Question: Heater Control Bypass Valve

I too, have an '84. I have replaced the heater control valve in my car with a p/n 74800. This may be the same one you're talking about, as it has four tubes. The '84 valve also has four tubes, with the fourth tube being a "T" on the aluminum tube that goes to the water pump! To use the...

New to the forums and Corvette ownership!

Be very careful about spending money on something, just because you want to "eliminate that as a possible cause of a problem". You'll go broke! Get yourself a copy of the '84 Factory Service/Shop Manual (FSM). (eBay, or Helm inc, Detroit MI, are two sources.) Don't waste your money on...

    Help! Headlight stuck down

Silicone spray isn't the best lubricant for this job. It sounds like a lack of lubricant problem to me. I like a light weight white grease, like CRC or Lubriplate to keep things moving smoothly. A little on the motor bearings as well as the gears and internal bushings should be a big help. :w

    Question about valve guides...

Big time!! Was this at your local "Stealership"? I'd sure put those guys on my "do not call" list!! These SBC engines will easily go 150,000 and still may not need new valve guides! :mad

    Question about valve guides...

I don't know what kind of mechanic would tell you that you needed new valve guides on a 46,000 mile engine! Or am I misunderstanding what you said? I can't imagine that you need new valve guides! Replacing the seals is MUCH different than replacing the guides!!

On my 85 have to smack the headlight after turning on the headlights

It's more than likely that nothing needs to be replaced. The '84 - '87 headlight motors have limit switches in the motors that can get dirty, which will cause this problem. These switches can be cleaned by opening the motors. It's a very good idea to lubricate the motor bearings and the...

    Question about valve guides...

With that few miles on the engine, it's doubtful your valve guides are bad. But the car is 27 years old, and seals have a way of getting hard with time. There are seals at the top of the valves to keep oil from getting thru the valve spring retainers, in addition to seals on the valve...

84's Rock! Especially on twisty mountain roads! Yes, those are ZR-1's I'm chasing!

    Starter interrupt relay

Not much. The question was about his '84. The 10A fuse shown in my photo is the Anti-Theft fuse, and is also shown in the '84 FSM, pg 8A-84. :w

    Starter interrupt relay

Totally different than the '81!! The Starter Interrupt Relay is behind the center panel, above the radio. It's the white relay in this pic: If you have the GENUINE '84 FSM, it's shown in fig. 8A-39 (pg. 8A-46). :w

    Replacing alternator

Have you considered rebuilding yours? They aren't that complicated, and you would be assured that you have the correct unit for your car. Rebuilding kits are available. :w

    89 alarm

You are so right about the ECM! I don't know where I came up with that info. I am deleting that garbage, in order to keep this forum clean! The starter interrupt relay is located behind the center panel (above the radio), but the alarm module is located behind the pass. side knee bolster. :)

    89 alarm

Yes, that's very interesting! Would it be possible for you to post a copy of the page in your FSM for the security system?
  16. Hot Rod Roy

    89 alarm

That is correct. Using the key in the ignition will not reset the alarm. Using the key in either door should shut off the alarm. If you want to lock the doors without setting the alarm, you can use the manual locking levers, or lock the doors with the key. When you use the push button power...

    Help! '89 29,000m odometer stopped

The odometer is driven by an electronic "stepper" motor, that gets its signal from the speedometer digital electronics. Either the stepper motor has failed, or there is a problem in your digital instrument cluster. The odometer module plugs into the instrument cluster, so it's fairly easy to...

    under hood light

I must have missed that your year was posted in your sig panel. I wasn't quite sure what your question was. There are mercury switches in each of the hood lamp housings that turn the lamps on when you open the hood. You can verify that by slowly opening your hood in the dark. If you want...

    under hood light

We gotta know the year before anybody can help you! None of them have light switches, but that can be fixed. If you're only interested in shutting off the lights, just close the hood and they'll go off! :eyerole

    Help! Engine Oil

Time to do a compression test. If compression is good on all cylinders, you may only need new valve stem and keeper seals, which can be done without major disassembly of your engine. As you're doing your compression test, how do the spark plugs look? All about the same, or only one, or a...
