Here's the trouble shooting info from the GM manual. Note that there are a couple of things that can cause raw gas to get to the canister. Hope it helps.

The hose that is on the bottom of the canister is just a drain. There should NOT be any gas in the canister, just vapors from the tank. There is a fuel separator on the side of the tank (speaking of my 78' and 71' ) with a check valve in it to stop any liquid fuel from going down the evap...
Remove the seat for sure. Also you will need a deep socket, u-joint and 12" extension to get the upper nut off. Take a couple of Motrin when you are done. :thumb

I'd take the latch right off the deck lid and clean it with a little degreaser then blow it dry. Give the pivot pin a shot of oil and apply some white grease to the part of the latch that contacts the pin on the lid.
What do you mean by "slipping"? Does the starter motor just spin and not turn the engine over? If so, then there is something wrong with the starter solenoid.

Check the SL ground wire at the rear (should be under the left end of the rear cross member), both stop light grounds get tied together then go to the chassis. Remove it and clean the connector and the frame. Also could be a bad SL switch on the brake pedal.
I never replaced them on my 78' but saved these two articles just in case I had to. From what I have read, the hardest part is removing the rusty bolts.
