Starter motor problems?

My starter motor sounds like it's slipping but I pulled it out and looked at the teeth on the gear and they seem fine. What would cause it not to catch and turn the engine over?

What do you mean by "slipping"? Does the starter motor just spin and not turn the engine over? If so, then there is something wrong with the starter solenoid.

If it's a manual tranny, put it in 4th and rock the engine about 90 degrees. Try starter and if it works, probably missing tooth on flywheel. If still no work, then like duke94 said, solenoid.

It's an auto, but I found out that the gear from the starter just didn't mesh with the gear that turns the engine. Sorry, I don't really know the terminology for all the parts . But now that I fixed it the engine decided to start shooting fire from the exhaust manifold when I turn it over.

It ran just fine before.

Did you have the spark plug wires off. If so, double check that they are installed correct.

Nope I didn't take the spark plug wires off, and I checked to see if I had them out of order and then corrected them.

You replaced the starter, and now it is backfiring and won't start?

Everything was normal before the starter acted up?

Does it try to start?

Does it crank and backfire a little bit, or is it all backfire?

Did you buy the correct starter?

Did you wire the starter correctly?

If not, it could be cranking the wrong direction and that could cause... I'm not sure what that would cause.
Take off the distributor cap and crank the engine. Have an idiot, i mean assistant, watch and see what direction the rotor spins.

Wouldn't it be easier to have the asst. watch the water pump pulley for cranking direction?

Because with the cap off, you don't have to worry about anything backfiring.

Then pull the coil wire.

I didn't buy another starter I just took it off to look at the teeth on the gear. After I put the starter back into place it started cranking and spit a few flames out of the exhaust manifolds, then I changed the timing and smoke came out of the carburator. It's probably something small now.
