My wife is also, shall I say , VERY understanding. From Corvette/ antique auto parts to Harley Davidson engine re-rings she puts up with a lot in the house.
I also carry some small aligator clip jumper leads, a multi meter, elec tape, and I don't leave home without my tire plug kit. Some times there's a compressor around. Just plug the hole and fill'er up. Had to do that a couple of times.

I think that they were originally filled with gear oil. They tend to seep a lot because they are near the exhaust. Heats up and thins the oil and compromises the seal so the accepted thing today is to pump them full of grease. My box was low [empty?] so I made up a grease fitting that I can...
