My 89 has never done that. I wonder if your ignition coil could be failing. The coil on mine is located in the distributor cap. If the car just quit suddenly without any surging or backfire, total loss of ignition may be the culprit. Those intermitant problems are so hard to deal with! I have...

I found out my axle ratio by reading the options card on the inside cover of the console lid. Then I looked the code up in my GM shop manual. The manual has a chart to decode the options code. My 89 vert with auto has the standard 2:59's. Radar :)

I think the VATS receives signals from the door mechanisim and key lock mechanisim so it knows if someone tries to tamper with the car (like using a locksmith cheater bar). When you had the door apart, it is possible that you disturbed some of the wiring harness and connections to these devices...
