my 81 already had the removal of all smog and computer done..The factory 81 tubular exhaust manifolds were pretty good except being prone to cracking, for those still having all the emissions, A.I.R. computer etc the only fix I have seen so far is to repair the orig existing or find original...
Hi..agree if close to home or town..but it depends where you are driving...here in the Western USA..you can be 150 miles from even a tiny one-horse town in the middle of the desert, ..and..with no cell service...hoping someone will come along in an hour or so..then, finding a tire...maybe...

yup..interesting point..you can of course carry the small spare in the under carrier..page 3-6 in the 81 owners manual says the take off tire/wheel can be temporarily carried in the carrier..if..deflated..and a diagram shows the placement..tho I don't get it..maybe the lower carrier parts don't...

thanks all so far..Can anyone post the shape and dimensions of exhaust ports on a stock, original head on 81 small block?
And..what else can I look for, on exterior of heads..to see if original, or a later install of a diff type. Exhaust port size and dimension may be one thing, and I will...
Quote" I like the way it makes my '71 track straight when I let go of my steering wheel at freeway speeds. "
OK..now I am really worried..let me know 12 hours in advance when and where this driving event takes place. Just don't send the notice by text while driving.
Anyway, I am feeling...
When I was 16..I focused on prophylactics....not protracters or whatever they are..I did not make my tools...I tried to use my tool..as often as I could.
and then..and now..I take my cars to a good alignment shop.

just to answer my own question..and thanks all for the advice posted..I went with Performance Distributors DUI for Chev 350, elect tach, no computer, mech advance of 24 all in at 3,000, vac can 8-10 hooked to manifold vac, and set timing for 36 at 3,000 so 12 static. Put on their Livewire plug...

agree Kpic..(first name?) as we know the web forums are like going to city park and listening to the "speakers"..interesting entertainment but a hi filter has to be on. I can't wait for Saturday to learn how to do alignment in my kitchen with a piano tuning fork, a yo yo and a water withing...
Too Broke: Did I say anything about expecting performance gain?? NO...but since you made your snarky comment, ..these headers are replacing leaky cracked headers..so that is the main reason..gotta pick some kind..might as well be these..yup they will look racy..
and..now..since they are...
updating my own posts on exhaust manifolds for 81: Hooker 2456 fit..a long tube, available in plain-blackpaint, at around $250, as a 2456-1HKR ceramic coat about $450, or 2456-4 ceramic but with a less shiny "titanium look" also $450. Std ports, 3 in collector so order reducer if needed to go...
a little less caster on left is correct and manages crowned roads
Correct you are Hib...setting caster slightly less on left (about 1/3 deg less) is part of correct street car alignment and is the way to manage crowned roads and most are crowned.
