True dual and balance pipe on '81

OK, here is what I did. I took the summit kit and took each of the 'T' pieces that it comes with and cut off the part that the balance pipe fits into until it was only one and one quarter inches long. I then took the balance pipe and cut off a 2 inch long piece. I then put that 2 inch piece...

True dual and balance pipe on '81

Does anyone have a true dual exhaust from Mid America and also have the balance tube from Summit installed on an '81? If so, where did you install the balance tube? It seems that with all the bends that are in the system, the only straight area where the balance tube can be installed is too...

News: Gail's first week in the paint shop

Gerrry, I have a question for either you or the painter. I was looking at my car and wondering what steps I would take for preparation if I was going to re-paint the car. It seems to me that I would remove the front and rear bumpers and paint them separately from the body. I think I would also...

    Smoothing my ride out

When I first got my 81 I thought the ride was a bit rough as well. Here is what I did. Bought new touring springs for the front and matched them with Bilstein shocks. The rear had a big heavy and squeeky metal spring. I replaced the metal spring with a TRW fiberglass spring, and that was...

Looking very nice Lance. I'd like to hear how you maintain the rims. Please share your procedure! :v Jeff

    Performance Upgrades

I have these on the end of true duals with no cats. I think it has a good corvette sound. I didn't like the sound of the big can style mufflers because they sounded just like that, big empty cans. Jeff

    81 rough idle

I had the very same symptom a few years ago. I also checked all over for vacuum leaks. Couldn't find any. Turned out to be the fuel pump went bad. Replaced it and life was good again.

    Alternator help

I got a Powermaster model 17-294 100amp chrome. Works good, looks nice. But before you go order yourself a new alternator, check the tension of the belt on the one you have now. It really needs to be quite tight. Just a little slippage will cause it to not charge properly.

    engine surge, varying idle

I tend to agree that if the problem started after the rebuild, then that would be suspect. However, your symptoms are very similar to ones that I have had in the past and it did turn out to be a bad fuel pump.

    let's use our forum more!

What I usually do is check this forum first, then the C3 general and technical forums. After that, if I have some time, I will check out the DC forum. I help out with problems whenever I can but I really feel more comfortable answering questions on problems that I have actually experienced myself.

    My two deepest C3 pains

I believe your rear end problems are due to the trailing arms being not quite what they should be. This is the classic one bad part leads to other parts going bad. Your fixing the parts that are currently broken but never actually getting to the source that caused those problems. I would have...

    installing true dual

The Mid America stainless is mandrell bent, but I can't speak for the aluminized version.

    installing true dual

Another update. Today I removed the hangers and drilled new holes in them under the lowest hole. That's about 1 inch lower. Put everything back together and now I would say that it looks about the same as the stock system in terms of ground clearance. I'm at about 5.25 inches now. Even...

    installing true dual

Update. I completed the job today. I guess the single hanger on each pipe is sufficient. Seems sturdy. Now I didn't measure the clearance between the pipe and the ground on the old system, but this new system seems pretty low. Right under where the hangers are it's only 4 inches to the...

    installing true dual

Thanks Dave. I started installing the driver's side and I see what you mean. The old hanger assembly must be removed and the the new hangers attach one to each pipe in that area. But what I don't think I understand is that you end up with only one hanger for each side of the system, where the...

    installing true dual

I could use some help from anyone here that has installed the true dual exhaust from Mid America Motorworks. The '81 vette has finally reached 26 years old and in New York that means, no more emissions checking at inspection time. So in celebration, I'm installing the true dual. The box...

    Tire size

I too have the BF Goodrich 255/60/15 combo and I have no rubbing. If there was rub while turning the front wheels, I would think that the front suspension might be worn. I put in new touring coil springs along with Bilstein shocks. There is plenty of clearance with that combonation.

    Had a SCARE

I'd like to check this out on mine, but could someone give a little more detail. Where is the flywheel inspection cover located, how do I remove it, and where are the bolts that might be loose? I do have some knocking at idle that I have never been able to determine the source of. Thanks for...

opinions on chrome wheel cones and spinner

I have the cones with the swept fin spinners on mine. I did not put any emblems on the spinners. I like the overall chrome look. I need to update the picture on the left as it was taken before I got these.

CHECK THIS 1981 OUT ON EBAY

I just looked at this on e-bay after you pointed it out, and wouldn't you know, this guy's address is only about 8 miles away from me and I've never heard of his business before. The address is in a residential area, so I assume that he builds these at his home. I guess I will have to try and...
