SPEARFISH — In a crowd of 360 Corvettes, new and old, from 29 states and five Canadian provinces at the 2013 Black Hills Corvette Classic, Keith Geppart’s 1967 Marina Blue Corvette Sting Ray convertible was the proverbial hen’s tooth.

One letter and two numbers make Geppart’s ‘Vette stand out among the rest: L88. That’s the Chevrolet option code that shoehorned a fire-breathing, 430hp, 427 cubic-inch big-block V8 — literally a race engine for the street — under the hood at the Corvette plant.

L88 cars are as rare as they are fast: History says Chevrolet underrated the horsepower on the cars by as much as 100 ponies to keep insurance companies off their backs. Geppart’s four-speed ‘vert is even more rare, featuring a factory tri-power setup, factory side pipes, the J56 power disc brake option (“according to the books there were only 261 of them made,” Geppart said.) and more. His hen’s tooth is in near concourse condition — a numbers matching car in restored-to-original spec.

“Numbers matching” is an important phrase in the classic car world, meaning the production numbers on the drivetrain and chassis match; this means the car still retains its original motor, which is rare for classic enthusiast vehicles.
