Looking at the hp numbers recently, it seems as if they should be similar in performance unless the C5 gets hooks up a lot better due to suspension /wt balance. Also, the hp curve's shape will
be important.

Has anyone raced a C-5? Know from drag strip slips?

a bunch of times....I'm a little on the modified side so it doesn't count......

Keep in mind the C5 horsepower went up as the later models came out. I've raced more than a few C5's. The early ones were no problem at all even with good drivers. The later ones are harder to beat with a good driver. I lost to a 2002 Coupe but only by 3/4 of a car length. Any convertible will be heavier. I've also hit 174mph top speed. Pretty sure the LT4 has a flatter torq curve if that's what you are asking.
Draw your own conclusions from this.

C5 autos and convertibles are no problem for me to out run. I agree with CKA on this one... the newer C5s run better than the older ones... the only ones that seem to give me a hard time are the newer 6 speed cars. I think the LS1 is very similar to the LT1. Newer LT1's, while rated at the same 300 HP, had enough changes to give them more than that, or at the very least run more consistant on the high side.

LS1 ratings...

... did increase I noticed, whereas the LT1 rating was always
the same. The later LS1's are rated at 5 hp more, (350) and
25 ft-lb more torque (375). I think 2001 was the jump but
maybe it was 2000.

So, 0-60, with equally good drivers, you'd say the LT4 car is
at least equal to say a 97-99 6spd coupe? I was thinking so.

I thought C5's advantage was supposed to be in handling
and top speed, as well as fit and finish.

Some say the C5 handles better. I'm not too sure about that, have no clue really. I can tell you from my autocross experience that driver counts for allot. Not sure what the top speeds are for c5's. I know the C5 hard top and the convertibles are slower than the coupes in top speed. I hit an honest 174mph in my completely showroom stock LT4. :D

So why don't we see for ourselves? Maybe we can contact some C5 owners and see if they will meet us at the track? Have our selves a shoot out only we don't have wait for Car and Driver to do it! Scott

Mainly depends on the driver. I beat some stock C5s but lose to others. 0-60' times seem to be about the same. Seems like whether they have an auto or manual makes a little difference too.

The C4 and C5 registries are trying to get a C4 Vs. C5 drag race together this October.... should be interesting:)

C-4 C-5 racing

Scott, if you were in Maryland, you could do that this weekend. Cecil County Dragway, Vintage Thunder drags. We are also running NCCC practice rounds to get ready for convention.:cool :cool

I was hoping some one that ran during convention would offer some of their times. I guess not.

Well I am pretty much stock & in a couple of street situtions I've not had any trouble keeping up with C5's in punch it after you are already rolling situations. This includes 2 Z06's. I do have 4.10's which really helps the 1st gear response.

If you eliminate the traction situation and make a good 1-2 shift I am pretty sure a stock LT4 with 4.10 gears will beat most C5's and certainly run neck & neck with a Z06 up to 60 mph.

Never been in an out & out race situation, but I think a stock LT4 & stock LS1 are going to be real close in 0-60 times.

LT4 Bud

Hi LT4Bud,

I was thinking of buying some 4.10 gears. Do you notice a big difference from you 3.54 rear end?? I'm a daily driver also, I don't want to lose to much gas milage, but I also want to take advantage of my horsepower too.
Do you have any recommendations??
Thanks, Vette96CE Jim :CAC

I don't know of anyone who has put in 4.10 gears on a LT4 that has not loved them.

Depending how you drive you will loose about 2mpg. In 6th gear 2000rpm equates to 73mph, so it is a very reasonable gear for highway cruising. Last weekend I averaged about 25.5mpg on a trip between Cleveland & Cincinnati, mostly interstate at 70mph with several stops/sidetrips. Performance improvement is definately seat of the pants especially in 1st gear. It just makes the car a lot more responsive & a lot more fun.

I also think eveyone would agree 4.10's are without a doubt the best bang for the buck around!!

Do It!!! You will love them!!!

Yo do the 410 gears give you more top end in sixth? I've thought about it since I did my first auto cross this Saturaday. Just wondering if it impacts the incredible high speed crusing of the car? I Love driving 100 mph at 2000 rpm's. Scott

I have an LT-4 and a good friend has an '03 vert, 6-speed. Each of us has aftermarket exhaust and cold air.

We have been to the drag strip several time and each of us has run a best of 13.07. He is about .5 mph faster and I am getting slightly better 60' times (both on street tires).
