little info on C5 auto trans- 3rd is 1.00 and 4th is OD. in stock form how much can you work the trans as you accelerate? would like to modify but do not want to lose smoothness as car goes through the gears-like to either leave in "D" or control gears. do trans or shifter kits (whats the difference) help without losing smoothness? do not want to damage trans thanks much.

I was quite surprised that the smoothness of the 3:42 gears and the Superyank 3500 was more lexus than corvette..REally smooth...like syrup....believe it or not..

I'd recommend those two mods along with a transgo kit ..and LS1 edit by an established tuner..who does the installation....

A buddy of mine just did this and he's raving!

Ran straight up with a Ferrari 360 ..

He says the highway rollons are awesome as well as the launching capability..

He does no racing at the track and just wanted to improve the acceleration capability of his car with street tires...

BTW..don't bother moving the gear shift on the A4..the automatic is really faster when left in Drive..(unless your in the mountains on curvy 2nd gear roads..

(the potiential for shifting into the wrong gear with this A4's design under high speed workouts is very high..) IMHO

I've heard the C6 will have a toggle switch type A5 with programming that allows much better gear shift logic when lifting into a corner or exiting.. similiar and probably better than the AMG technology in present MB cars...

The Super yank 3500 and 3:42 combo was like right out of the factory..you'd barely know it was there until you hammered it!

Quite surprising for me at the time.. was the fact that the upshifts were so transparent..I didn't care for it.. You could barely tell the upshifts happened except for the acceleration and tach..

I've heard the Trans go kit would have been more aggressive..

You could always do convertor and gears..decide if you want more shift feel and then install the transgo ..

PCM upgrade absolutely necessary with gear change..

Good luck!

Hi there,
With the mods that JB has mentioned, there are other things that must be considered.
First, mileage, what do you have???
Second, with a stall converter, as the 3500, you generate alot more internal heat in the fluid, and therefore, require a transmission fluid cooler. This also produces more strain on the fluid, which will require more frequent changes.
Third, your city fuel mileage will decrease with this mod.
There are so many ways to mod an automatic equipped car, that you must be appropriately advised to the pros and cons of every change.
Yes, your acceleration will be very good, however, that is only one part of a larger picture.

auto trans reply to replys

thanks all for the imput - obviously everyone appreciates the quality of the auto trans in its present configuration. can I drive it as is in "3"? Manual seems to imply this is ok and will help acceleration and not harm trans - know the gas mileage will suffer somewhat - this is ok as I, 80% of the time, leave it in "D".
What is a yank3500? sometype of converter? -wouldn/t really want to forego smoothness and it was implied that I would with transgo kit. more imput, please!! thanks again for all the good stuff - will do the Vortex change for breathing--MAF housing seems to be a waste of money, but I'm not sure of the value of a MAT sensor or the coupler. will add Corsa Indy pipes"listen to that rumble!!! cross pipes are a clever way to get rid of unwanted resonance!! not sure about Hypertech Performance Programmer - will have to see. that about covers it for now.

Hi,
Yank3500 is a converter, with a higher stall speed, which is the speed at which the converter delivers full power to the transmission.
Stock is 2025rpm, which is very good for drivability.
the higher the stall speed, the higher in the rpm that you transfer power to the wheels. This is effective in shortening you 1/4 times as when you couple the engine with the differential higher in the torque curve, your car launches faster.
This will have no effect on the shifting firmness, Only in launches.
Transgo, if installed correctly, will give you firmer shifts, without being harsh, IF INSTALLED CORRECTLY. Some like to install the strip version, which is very harsh, and cannot really be driven smoothly.
The heavy duty version, when installed, will provide firmer shifts, without giving you whiplash.
I hope this helps, c4c5:hb
