Steve and owner Chan, were real pro's
It was a pleasure working with nice, honest people who went out of their way to show me and some friends the car. On Wed, June 23, we confirmed it is a 'real' 63 ZO-6 big tank car, not listed in the survay......but is now. It is white with saddle LEATHER and no radio. The right front wheel well has had some body damage from what appears to be a tire explosion. The rest of the body is in very good, undamaged condition.
All four backing plates still have the dust covers on them so 41 years of dirt hid the screens from the back. The ZO-6 shoes, hardware and fin drums are missing. The motor is a non original Chevelle or? 327. The trans and rear are the original.
Water got into the cockpit some time in its life and there is rust under the dash, and in the birdcage. The chassis is surprisinly in good condition, with light surface rust only.
All in all, a very nice project. Only 72 big tank Z0-6'S were made and this one deserves to come back. I have located two brake packages, and am bent over as I type this. I also know of a complete 327 fuel injection engine, from the top of the air meter to the tail shaft of the transmission that was a complete crate unit with factory stamps and no vin. Only $10,000. Trouble is the dates are Jan 25, and this is a May car. Too early for sure, but shows once you start looking, things show up. That engine has 2500 miles on it and runs like new. ( anyone looking??)
In a quick two weeks, a lot has happened. The new buyer has asked to not be identified, so don't ask. I will say that the car will be restored........and that is the impossible task......but sure neat that one of these great pieces of history is going to come back. Keep looking guys, they still exist.
I even got lucky again at Bloomington. Found a 24000 mile 1968 Camaro Z-28 from Nickey Chevrolet. It was drag raced and put away in the early 70's. Now I have to get it back to California.
Save the Wave,
Jim
