about a month ago, I helped my buddy replace the clutch in his '66. It was perfect until yesterday. We tool a long cruise on Saturday, then on Sunday he went out again. He was sitting at a stop light with the trans in neutral (Clutch out). All of a sudden he heard this awful squeel coming from his car. To make a long story short, the cr only makes the noise while in neutral with the clutch all the way out. If he depresses the clitch pedal slightly, the noise goes away. The car is still shifting and grabbing gears like a mofo!

Any ideas as to what this might be?

Thanks, Dave

It sounds like the throw out bearing to me. Have him adjust the clutch pedal for more free play - it shold go away.... BUT the TO bearing wears very quickply when the clutch does not have enough free play so it is likely on its last legs.

I had the same problem -- learned the hard way!!

I agree with Brian. Sounds like a new throw out bearing is in order.

When you replace it, make sure it's correctly installed on the fork; both the fork ends AND the anti-rattle spring go INSIDE THE GROOVE on the bearing. If it's installed any other way (and the design allows it to be installed wrong), you won't be able to get the proper 1" - 1-1/2" pedal free play and correct disengagement, which will then fry the bearing from constant rotation.

Thanks much all. I was thinking along those lines myself. We are going to adjust some and see what happens. We think there might be too much free play in the pedal, as opposed to not enough.
