1967 Corvette Stingray with L36/L68/L71/L88

Hi,

Question?

During the 1967 Corvette Stingray model run, were all big block engine valve covers painted Chevrolet Orange?

The reason for asking: I'm the original owner of VIN 194677S100560 that was built early September 1966. VIN 100560 is an L36 Engine and the left valve cover is sprayed Chevrolet Orange over chrome.

Were any 1967 Corvette big block engines built at Tonawanda Engine Assembly with chrome valve covers during 1967 model year?
I've seen 1967 Corvette's for sale with big block engines and chrome valve covers.

GM did not paint rocker covers which were already chromed. Someone replaced that one cover with the wrong part painted to "match" because L36es came with orange covers. In fact, my understanding is that all the BBC rocker covers were orange in '67.

Thank You for your reply.
I'm the original owner of 1967 Corvette Sting Ray 194677S100560. This VIN 100560 was purchased new with RPOL36 (427CI 390HP. The left side valve cover was painted Chevrolet Orange over chrome plating. This was noticed after several months of ownership. The VIN didn't have any engine work prior to noticing this.
At the time I thought Chevrolet wanted to use old stock and painted chrome valve covers Chevrolet Orange.

All 1967 BB Corvette engines had painted valve covers EXCEPT the (16) L-89's, which had chrome valve covers. :thumb

This is an interesting situation considering that you are the original owner and know that no work was done to the engine before you noticed the paint flaking off of the chrome very early in your ownership. Even though no '67 Corvette big blocks other than the L89 had chrome valve covers, other 396's and 427's did. The parts book from that era shows full size, Camaro and Chevelle with chrome valve covers. Could it be that there wasn't a proper valve cover available when your engine was assembled and they installed what they had close at hand before sending the engine off to paint?

John would be able to speak to the possibility of this happening.
