Are there any tricks to removing a gas tank build sheet without leaving some of it on the tank?

Possibly heat it to soften the glue or steam. Have to take care not to get it too hot or wet. I think I did my '67 years ago with a razor blade scraper going very slow and carefully after warming it with a heat lamp.
