We are trying to take the steering column off to connect a new speedometer cable...it WON'T come off. Is there a trick to it? Thanks.

First of all welcome to the CAC!

Second of all, yick, not high on the list of fun things to do! The trick is to not take the steering column off at all. Instead, shove a skinny persons arm up in the birds nest and feel your way to connect the cable. Never done it myself but I've heard of plenty of folks who have.

Another way would be to remove the top dash pad and attack the problem from above.

But to remove the steering wheel, you have two bolts under the dash and two at the firewall. Then you need to disconnect the steering "rag joint" in the engine compartment. Disconnect the wiring and it should slide right out.

But I would try the dash trick first.

Awesome idea Tom, I never even thought of that! :upthumbs I'm guessing you come out with much less cat scratches on your arms that way;).
