I recently read that a 1978 vette is a,
25th anniv. model,
coup,
standard corvette.
It was my understanding that ALL 78's are 25th anniv. model's.
What's going on?
Could a 78 also be reffered to as a Sting Ray?
Thank's for clearing this up!:confused

1978 was the 25th anniversary of Corvette Production and all 1978 Corvettes have the silver badging on the nose and gas cap. The '78 came in 3 model versions:
  • 1YZ37 ~ Base Coupe (production = 40,274)
  • 1YZ87/78 ~ Indy 500 Pace Car (production = 6,502)
  • B22 ~ Silver Anniversary (production 15,283)

This information comes from our "Tech Center" ~ Model Center facts for the 1978 Corvette ;)
Model Center said:
  • The 1978 model featured a new "fastback" rear styling which consisted of a large rear glass window and much more luggage space behind the seats.
  • Chevrolet celebrated the 25th anniversary of the Corvette with a special silver anniversary Corvette which featured a special two tone silver paint job. This special paint consisted of a light toned silver on the top half of the car and a darker silver on the lower half. This was separated by a silver striping. Aluminum wheels and sport mirrors were part of the option and production was not limited.
  • All 1978 Corvettes came with special 25th anniversary emblems.
  • The Corvette was chosen to pace this year's Indy 500. As a result, Chevrolet produced a special limited edition Pace Car replica which featured their own vehicle identification numbers, and a special black and silver two paint scheme and red striping. Chevrolet built one for each Chevrolet dealer thus yielding a total of 6,502 as published by Chevrolet.
For more information please check the Tech Center ~ Model Center input the model year for more information ;) .

I have a B22 Silver Anniversary model.
In addition to the 25th Anniversary emblems on the nose and gas door, the 25th logo is also on my steering wheel and shifter.
As per law enforcement classifications; any 2-door car is a "coupe" and any 4-door car is a "sedan".

As far as the Stingray name... the badging last put on the Corvette was on the 1976 model. Even though there was not much of a difference between the 76 and 77 model, the 77 no longer had the Stingray badge.

No, it is only dumb when you don't ask. Everyone wasn't born knowing what they know...they had to learn it somewhere and if you don't ask, you'll never know! One of my favorite things about this CAC site is how friendly everyone is, especially about answering questions...and believe me, I've asked some doozies!

Heidi, Mine has it on Steering Wheel too,and it's a 1YZ37 Allway's been There!!:upthumbs junk!!

The 77 is considered the last of the Stingray models even without the Stingray badging. Primarily because of design. The body design was no different then 1968 through to include 1977. 1978 through and to include 1982 were not Stingray since the body style changed. Once in a while someone will pop up and want to argue the 1977 was not a Stingray but they are wrong. There were some earlly models that had the badging on them but I do not recall the number; this was very early on in the 77 production. Rare81 gave the correct info on the 78 and BTW, Gary, don't feel like you asked a dumb question. People are always learning abou these cars and that is just part of the enjoyment is the history behind any type of car; asking helps the continuance of Corvette growth in my book.
