Is there a computer in a 1980? If so, how much does the computer control? Can it be eliminated and all the instruments still work? Thank you.

YES there was a computer in 1980 ;) .. it came in the California LG4 305 engines, it is the same one used in the 1981... I looked at the photo's on your website and it appears your car has the LG4 type valve cover, and it is an automatic which lends to the therory it could very well be a CA 1980 ;)

The computer sits in the battery compartment on the front wall.. Yes you can eliminate the computer, You may want to upgrade the distributor and the carb.. the carbs were "special" for the LG4 and the computer control..

Happy restoration and welcome aboard :w

:BOW Oh the wisdom of the Jedi Master :BOW Forgot all about the Kalifornia destined 80's.:_rock :beer :w

Thanks for the heads up. You were correct about the origination of my '80. It's a California Vette with the 305. The serial number of the car confirms it. I'll dive into it and see if it's behind the drivers seat. Thanks again..

That's right; The 305 had a computer. The carb and dist were controlled be it. It's not that big a deal if it is all working correctly. I wouldn't touch it unless something has gone bad. I loved my 80 with the 305 and would take another one in a second if I got the chance. I ran great all the time and 20 MPH on the hyway; I Loved it. If you are just looking for a little more go from it remove the cat and get some good mufflers.

Want to trade for a 78 4 speed?

Gary

Thanks for the trade idea. Gonna hang onto the '80 for a while to see how fast I can go to the poor house fixin' it up! Ocean Shores resident, huh? Loved that place since I was a kid. Still have some pics from the 60's where my brother, sister, and I were climbing on the Catala. Hope to get down your way one of these summers and do some surf riding on my Jetski. Thanks for your post-Scott

Scott,

I still have a few misc. parts laying around for an 80; So if you need something let me know maybe I can help. You thing like relays, some interior pieces and both doors. Just suff like that and I'll make you a real deal on some of it. Besides it would give you a good reason to come to the beach. Well take care and stay in touch.

vetski179 - there were 3221 of the LG-4 305's produced in 1980, since the 350's couldn't get past the California smog nazis. You can disable the computer, but I'm pretty sure the distributor will need to be swapped out. My 80 had the computer disabled and has a distributor with the vacuum advance. I still ran the original computer-controlled Q-jet carb with no problem, although it's kinda pricey should you need to replace it. :( Found that out the hard way - $739 !!! Ended up with an Edelbrock 1904 spreadbore (not computer-controlled) for about $450. If your's is running fine as it is - I'd leave it alone and just :Steer !!!

I can say that I sold the 305 out of my 80 after it was wrecked to a friend. He put it in his S-10 Blazer without a computer. He did change the carb, but that was all and the motor ran great. He has been very happy with it for 2 years now. So, any way I'm guessing but I'd say the dist should work OK.
