1981 406 engine swap started today

Here is a close up of the bed liner shot on the firewall brake booster mount. Pictures don't do it justice. This is after Renee sanded the rough stock adhesive goop, for a fresh look.

One last shot.

He will come back and details the small parts (brake booster, m/c, etc). This engine bay will be excellent, easy to clean...and fresh looking.

What a great idea using foil to mask off for the spraying!

Beats trying to paper and tape!

406 & stuff

Hello all. I decided to build this motor over 2 years ago while I was in college. One of my instructors talked me into building a 406 over a 383. I traded him a set of vortec heads for a 2 bolt 400 block and crank. He is a master machinist, and he bored the 400 .30 over at the college for nothing. I bought some aluminum zz4 heads and intake off another student that decided to shoot over 250 shot of nitrus into a zz4 crate motor and lost a piston. He only made two passes at the track on the motor. The heads weren't hurt at all. The intake valves had no pits on the face of the valves at all. I did a three angle valve job at the college. I lapped the intake valves in. The exhaust valves had a few pits, but I cleaned the face of the valves and checked the tolerances, and checked the assembled spring height of the springs that came with my comp cam 280 duration. I am using 5.7 connecting rods out of an 96 tahoe motor. I had the motor inturnally balanced. I have 30cc Keith Black hypereutectic pistons and high flow oil pump. We fooled around with an engine building computer program putting in bore, stroke, cam, heads, carb, intake, etc and this motor should be anywhere from 425-460hp and the torque at 2000rpm is over 400 and is over 500 at 3200 and doesn't drop below 400 up to 6000rpm. The cam's power range is from 2000-6000rpm. I just aquired a 700r4 from a 92 astro van I'm building next week to handle the motor. I will eventually change the 2.87 rear end if Chris or Niki don't tell me to go away. I think I have written enough? If not just let me know.

I forgot!

I have to thank Chris and Nikki for letting me use thier garage and helping me with my vette. After seeing Killer, I have gained a lot of respect for Chris' ability and knowledge of corvettes. So, please don't chase me away yet.....Chris and Nikki:Steer!!!!

Welcome to CAC Kurt!

Sounds like your 406 build will be a real street warrior!

Is your Vette going to be a daily driver?

BTW, you cannot write too much! We like to soak up all the details of each other projects.

I plan on it being my daily driver. Its engine compression is 9.6 to 1 so I have to run 93. When I build the tranny I'm putting a corvette servo in and removing the accumulator springs and putting in spacers to get that good hard shift. Makes it feel good to me. I will have a 2500 stall converter. IT puts me 500rpm into my motors power band. I haven't decided what gear to run in the rear yet. I have overdrive .67 to 1 so I'm thinking 3.73 but I have enough torque where I could go with 3.55. I thought about 4.11 but I maybe driving it to other states for corvette events and stuff, so that isn't an option. I have to go to Georgia this weekend so no work will get done unless Chris can't contain himself. Then next weekend we hopefully will be driving to a corvette event in the Orlando area, so not much of anything is getting done for two weeks. However, progress will be made...

If its a driver stick with the 3:55 the 700R4 should have a lower first gear and wider splits then a th350 as it is a more modern trans. You should have plenty of torque to pull them

Welcome to the Corvette Action Center Kurt. Great project. It's nice to know that someone is keeping Chris busy.

Tom
