1981 hood release cable snapped

Hi - My 1981 hood release cable snapped, and I've tried some of the solutions offered in other threads. My question:

Is the 1981 designed the same as the '78 pictured on this site:
http://www.madvet.com/tech/techartSharkHood.html

1. I see a plastic mesh that goes around the interior of the hood -limited vantage point with hood closed
2. What is the plastic plug that is described in this thread:
http://www.corvetteactioncenter.com/forums/showthread.php?threadid=2919
- I don't feel/see a plastic plug.

Any ideas??

Man! I've had nightmares about this happening .

If you feel the screen at the end of the trough you have gone too far. The plugs are about the size of a quarter and they are along the front wall opposite from the windshield. There is one in front of each latch.
