- 1982 Silver Coupe (Sold!), New C5 in 3 weeks!
Hi Guys,
I've heard in the past that the 1982 Corvette's top speed was 125mph. But the thing that confused me was that 125mph is attainable in 3rd gear, but in all the specs I've seen it shows as the top speed in 3rd and 4th (overdrive) as being 125mph. I thought this was weird... I thought that maybe the car did not have enough power to beat 125mph once it had shifted into 4th.
But, for Christmas my brother bought me Dave McLellan's book "Corvette from the Inside". In this book he says that the 700R4 for '82 was setup so that it would not shift from 3rd to 4th at WOT. They changed this for the 1984 Corvette. In the 1984 Corvette the tranny would shift into 4th at WOT and achieve a higher top speed, something just over 140mph.
Also, the top speed attainable in 3rd is not 125mph... according to Dave's book, it's rpm limited to 128mph.
My question is this, the 1982 had 200bhp and the 1984 had 205bhp. My modified 1982 has about 235 - 240bhp and therefore more power than the stock 1984. So surely, if I back off from full throttle just enough to allow the tranny to shift back into 4th it should still carry on up to just short of the cars top speed. Let's face it, you've still got your foot 95% of the way to full throttle, the car should definately go faster because the 205bhp 84 model can do just over 140mph.
I'm estimating that my 1982 with the extra power it develops and at a 95% of full throttle condition it should at least achieve 140mph too, even 145mph might be attainable.
What's everyone's thoughts on this?
Cheers
