I have a 1984 crossfire corvette, (automatic). I put about 500 miles a year on it, it is garage kept and has 60,000 miles on it now. I have owned it since 1986, it had 15,000 miles on it when I got it.

Here is my story- I parked it at the end of last summer it was fine. Started it this summer used it a few times it was fine. Then one day took it out and noticed it had a very slight miss at full throttle on a highway acceleration ramp, (no miss at cruising speed or around town even under heavy purposely created load). After I got to my destination, (about 1/2 hour driving), I parked it for about 1-1/2 hours. It started right up when it was time to leave, when I went to backup I touched the throttle and it stalled. I restarted and same thing. So I started it and peddled the throttle to try and get the RPM’s up in neutral, I did but it did not want to and the engine RPM was hunting up and down a lot when I was holding the throttle steady in one spot. After I managed to get it backed up and going down the road about 1/2 mile I came to a red light and it was fine, ( It always seems to fix itself after driving a bit.)

I replaced the plugs, cap & rotor for the missing problem it did not help, although I can definitely feel a smoother idle. I ordered the computer coolant sensor (front of engine) as the connector is decayed and from what I have read could MAYBE be my problem. ordered from ecklairs but it is back ordered and has not come in yet.

It does this same thing every time I take it out and run it for over 1/2hour. If I start it at home and let it run till the water temp gets to 190 and shut it off, wait 1hr then start it, it is fine as far as that throttle issue is concerned. It all ways starts cold without a problem. I don’t know if I have two problems here or not (slight miss and the RPM hunting problem). I also cleaned the connectors attached to ECM but it did not change anything. I checked the throttle position sensor it SEEMS fine, idle is .5V and full throttle is 4.6V. The check engine light works but never comes on to show a fault so I am assuming there would not be any codes in the ECM. I would GREATLY appreciate any guidance on this matter. I saw this you wrote in one of your replies “The Cold Start Module / Elapsed Time Sensor is located behind center of I/P, taped to the I/P harness.” What does I/P mean, maybe this cold start module is acting up? Any way I have written a book here. Please help if you can. Thanx in advance Matt Hikel.

There is no "cold start module" that I'm aware of on a L83.

Fuel pressure is one suspect. The L83 does not lend itself to easily connect up a fuel pressure gauge to check it...especially under load. The stock L83 pump is notoriously weak, barely able to handle even that engine. A VERY common upgrade is to replace the stock TBI pump with a TPI pump (say for a '85 Vette). Without having a fuel pressure gauge connected though it is just a guess...but worth the expense in my opinion.

Have you done so simple as check the fuel filter? Basic tuneup items? (cap/rotor/plugs/wires...yada yada)

Hey thanx for the reply. I will try changing the fuel filter, it hasn't been changed in a LONG time. Will let you know what happens.

Might change the O2 Sensor. 84's will not really set a code that easily.
