1984 head light retractor

I recently purchased my 84 Vette that has been barely used this past ten years and having some problem with the retractors. The left or right retractor will hang up randomly. When they hang ans stay up if I rotate the white knob next to the retractor it will close. My mechanic feels it may work in as I start using the car, but he also mentioned that the retractor on the 84 was only used on that model and year, the replacement is about $350.00 for each unit. Does anyone out there know of some type of maintenace that can be done or is this just a throw away part replacement when it finally bits the dust? :confused
