I would like to change my transmission fluid over the weekend. What is the Ft/LBS for the pan bolts and what fluid is recommanded for my 84 with the stock auto 700R4 tranny? Also is there a pattern for the bolts that should be followed?
Thank you,
Brimis

Auto trans pan bolt torque

My '95 manual says 97 inch pounds (about 8 ft-lbs) and 'alternately and evenly' for a pattern. DEXRON III or DEXRON IIE is the recommended fluid for a '95.
NAPA sells a very nice gasket that has holes slightly smaller than the bolts so it holds all of them in place while you finger start them (no wrench till all are started several turns). The gasket is soft enough that sealer is not needed. If the gasket starts to extrude as you tighten, it's too tight.
NAPA sells two or three grades of filter/gaskets for some cars. The good gasket comes in the more expensive one.
Make sure to remove the old filter seal grommet if it's stuck in the housing. Getting two of them up there prevents the screen from seating properly and can be a real bear to get back out.
Good luck

Thank you, I actually called Napa for the kit. I'll tackle the job over the weekend.

84 transmission pan bolt specs...

According to my service manual for the auto trannsmission in the 84, the torque is 12 ft/lbs on the 16 pan to case bolts.

Looking at the service manual, there are some other considerations:

1 - the pan may have RTV sealant - use a rubber mallet on the sharpest corner of the pan to jar it loose.. they also recommend two special bolts be used in the pan while whacking it with the hammer to prevent damage.

By the way, I still have the complete GM service manual, the electrical troubleshooting supplement to the shop manual, the parts and illustration catalog, and a brand new Feb 83 glossy 57 page sales brochure... if you are interested...

PVTPILOT,
If you find a minute, email me regarding the manual. I'm sure it's more in depth then my Haynes manual.
