I am about to close the deal for a 1985 vette with manual trany. The seller told me that the solenoid for the overdrive needs to be changed-not a big deal according to him, $100 part easy to change. Is this true or is this going to be my first major repair? BTW there are 95K miles in the box. The car is in a good condition overall. Thanks

Easy enough to change but it may not be the reason the O/d is not working.
How does he know the O/d solenoid is the fault?
Many problems ( not unfixible with $$$ ) with old 4+3 trans that have not been maintained correctly.Early O/d's had built in weaknesses that were overcome by upgrades on the later versions .See

$1500 exh for a rebuilt unit

Thank you for your response.
I will ask the question, how does he know?

As a note , if he says the solenoid is not working it could be as simple as bad / disconnected wiring , faulty O/d relay , etc.
All these items are getting long in the tooth and regularly turn up as problems on the C4 Forums
