1986 hood prop rod

Hello everybody, I am new to the site and this is my first post. I am a proud owner of a 1986 4+3 coup.
I have a question about the hood prop rod. My car has it on the left side and it is the same style as the 1987 prop (it looks like it could be hydraulic). A buddy of mine has a 86 and his prop is on the right side and it is the version that folds in half. According to my research all 1987 models had the hydraulic looking version and then late 1986 models did too. Anyone have insight on this?

Welcome to the CAC! The previous owner probably swapt out the old unit for the 87 one. It is a little easier to open then the scissor type that are on the 86's.

Vettefan nailed it. Also, the scissors type was prone to failure, through folding laterally, rather than longitudinally, in addition to his comments. Many early C-4 owners have changed it.

AH the scissor hood prop ,Change that out before that thing flattens you.
I changed mine , it broke my glasses tore my shirt and what a sore back.
The 2 shocks fail in the front and wham it hurts.
