1986 paint question

The upper back half, including the bar with the 5th break light needs to be repainted.
looks like someone waxed all the paint off. can actually see primer in some areas.
question is: Is dark Metallic red paint available, and where can i get it on line.
Is there a paint code hidden some where on this car.
Any information or hints would be nice.

There is a paint code on the Vin and RPO tag under the rear compartment covers.

Go to Etouchup.com with the paint code. They mix the paint and send it in aerosol cans and touch up bottles.

Word of caution...When painting rubber you need to use a special "flexing" primer before painting

Dark Red Metallic is code 74. You should see something like 74U/74L printed on the bottom line on the RPO sticker under the console lid. There will also be a "WA" paint code. Take both of these to a local auto paint supply store and they can mix up a can to suit your needs.

The finish is a base coat/clear coat so repainting the rear facia wll involve a few steps. If you don't have any experience with auto painting or have access to a compressor and decent paint gun, then you should have it done at an autobody shop. I would paint the entire rear facia in order to get a good match and make it look uniform.

The rear facia will require a flexing agent in the paint so the paint will not crack after it cures.

:duh I was thinking convertible.

The paint supplier I use says they've gotten away from ADDING flexing agents and now there's a pre paint spray, that actually "melts" the plastic so the paint bonds better. Just an FYI

You got a lot of good technical advice from everyone but I will spread a word of layman's caution on you. I tried a quick touch up on my 95 Vette, top was completely trashed. Found out that the car had faded slightly so when I was done painting you could tell I was done painting.

Took the car to a body man in town who specialized in touch ups Took him 3 days and 400 of my greenbacks but you can't tell where he started or left off. Finished the rest of the car with a nice professional glazing and buff for $200 more. The car is almost showroom now. Worth every penny.

It's more of an art than it is a science. And this the most !@#$#@@!@! that I've spread in a long time.

You Guys are Great. thanks for the information.
I have a compressor & gun and come spring I will do this.
I have painted cars in my day, but the last time was 20 years or so ago
when ''IMRON'' was the ticket.
The rest of the finish is perfect. just the upper back half looks bad.
Who knows if the project works out... maybe i will do the whole car.
