after having a local mechanic accidentally bump the orange release button while working on my car dropping the hood on his head and worse his tool box sitting on top of the motor, ended up cracking my hood, he did pay for the repair and the repainting job.
I decided to replace the support strut with a new one, which I have. the question is how does the orange release button stay in the safe position? It appears to me that a spring should be behind that button to hold it safe until you push it in when safely dropping down the hood.
Or I'm I looking at this problem wrong?

The orange colored release is not spring load. I think they used the orange color to make it obvious what
you need to push to release it so the hood can be lowered.

First picture is what my factory 89 support looks like.
Second one is what's on my 90.
Third one shows a metal wedge that someone in Texas made and was selling a couple of years ago for $18.00.
You have to manually install and remove it.
