1992 LT1 6-spd Bright Red Coupe
This is my first post to this forum. I have a 1992 6-spd coupe that has an LCD display issue. About 2 weeks ago it started "blinking out" and "scattering" when I would hit a bump. Sometimes even just driving it would start going blank. I found a CCM fault code 27 and started going through the diagnostics. I haven't found an intermittent short to ground or open circuit. I put the dash back together and still have a problem.

Has anybody seen something like this. I'm trying to avoid the dealer if possible.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.;help

Welcome to CAC Mountaineer. :w

I had this exact problem when I purchased my 95 back in July. Whenever I would hit a bump the LCD would scramble. If I tapped on the display with my knuckle it would come back in.

Check this thread here.

First thread.

And the issue was resolved here in this thread.

LCD Fixed.

Get back to us once you have read this and see if it matches what you are seeing.

Leon,

Your problem sounds EXACTLY like mine. I even thought about the pressure of the cluster to the IP Harness connector. It seemed like I had to tighten the capscrews to get the pins to pull in.

I'll pull the cluster back out (good tip on the tilt lever, I had been fighting the trim panel around the steering column when I dropped it) and disassemble. The pics are great. Sounds like you haven't had trouble with it since?

Any tips for disassembly or handling of the LCD?

It may be a while before I get to work on her again but I'll post again if I fix the problem.

Thanks again for the info.

Rob,

The display hasn't blinked once since I put her back together.

As for taking the IP apart, there are a bunch of screws on the back that hold the cover on. Then I think there is a set that holds the fron cover on. From there there is another set of screws that hold the gauges to the PCB (printed circuit board). You will be able to see the wires coming into the LCD from the PCB. The wires on the PCB side are soldered directly to the PCB. It's a little tricky removing the connector from the LCD side as the pins from the LCD sit in fairly tight. Just be careful not to bend any pins when you remove the LCD. Once apart you can just use the LCD and the PCB to test the pins on the LCD. You will need to bring the orange card that sits behind the LCD as it will make it easier to read.

I made the mistake of actually pulling at the pin on the glass which totally disconnected the pin from its contact. Don't do this. ;) You will go from an intermittent display to one that doesn't work at all. :eek

Be careful off the needles in the analog gauges. I bumped the tach needle and now it rests at the bottom of the gauge when the car is off instead of 0. It does come up to 0 whan the key is turned on so I don't worry about it.

Also, be careful not to touch the light bulbs on in the IP. These are very sensitive to the greases from your hand will cause them to burn out. While I was in there I took the time to pull them all out and clean them really well, but handled them with a towel only.

Good luck,

Leon
