I am in need of replacing the #2 gauge ground cable near the starter on my 1981. I lost a nut to my exhaust manifold connection which created a lot of heat onto this cable. I have fixed the exhaust leak but now need to replace the damaged cable.

The cable is black, a #2 gauge (thick, about the size of your thumb), has a flat circular lug on each side, and is 12" long. It is found on the right side of the engine near the starter. In fact, right in front of the electrical shield for the starter.

Where can I find a replacement for this cable?

Summit or Jegs too. When you put the new one on, clean up its ends real good and same to the connection its going to be put on. Use star washers for a good tight fit. Many problems with fiberglass cars can be traced to poor ground connections.

Thanks for the website reference, but in the catalog I can not find the ground cable I am reffering to. Maybe I missed it.
Which part is it? I see a lot of straps but these are the thin radio ant. kind.

The Grounding cable I refer to can be found in the
1981 Assembly Manual sheet 378 Drawing 6Y 3
It is called the "Grounding Cable & Washer (12A)".

Thanks,

Well, I went back and looked again. Found the part I need at
http://www.lectriclimited.com/

BATTERY CABLES and GROUND STRAPS
Order No. Price Description
GC7282 $15.00 GROUND CABLE, starter motor to frame, all

This item is 14" long, a #2 guage cable with heat rated insulation. There are two hole type terminals crimped to each end.

Thanks for the guidance,

I just called Dave using the “The Parts Connection” and was given this information:

The Chevrolet part number for this item is: 8901980
It was discontinued several years ago by Chevrolet, but I guess some Dealers have these still in stock.
Dave used the parts locator to find an original one for me.
$11.45 plus $6.00 shipping for the original part.

Can't beat that. I am sure the part from lectriclimited is just as good, but I will go with the original for now.

So soon my vette should have none of the recent starting problems I have been having. A couple of Long starts, and just the other day a no start while the engine was hot. This was before I found the exhaust leak. I have fixed the leak which cured an extra warble type sound coming through my exhaust mixed with the regular growling tones. I have experienced the return of horse power also.

If I continue to have problems I will replace the starter (the windings may be separating due to the high heat caused by the leak directly onto this area) and add a Moroso Starter Shield for $22.95 from Jegs.
