Recently my service traction control system light and service abs light comes on and off when I start car up but when I shut it off and restart it again it would go away. A week later it now stays on all the time when I start the car up any idea's what it could be? ;shrug

Thanks, Bob.

Sorry, still working on first cup of cofee so this will be a less than cogent reply.

Pretty common problem, could be a lot of things.

Starting with something as simple as a bad (or undercharged) battery, or a bad ground connection somewhere in the car; through a bad steering or wheel speed sensor (or the connection to), or a bad component (like the EBCM).

Best place to start is to pull the diagnostic codes (look for the sticky on the site that explains how to pull them, turn ignition on (but dont start car) hold the Options button and hit the Fuel button four times, the DIC will run through a list of any error codes, codes whit an H after them are history codes (problem occurred but is not currently a problem), codes with a C are current problems. Write down the codes ) and post them in this message.
Soemone should be along to vector your search for the cause based on the codes you re getting.

Alternately, you can search the forum (search button on top of page) with the code numbers for the errors you are getting.

Whats this going to cost me ?

Oh, where did I put that crystal ball, ah, here it is :

Best case = $0, you find some minor connection, charge, or ground issue and easily fix it yourself.
Probable worse case = Under $200, you find that its the EBCM and you remove it and send it to ABSFixer.com, they repair it and warranty the repair for the life of the car (actually a better solution than replacing the unit with a brand new OEM part, because the OEM part is likely to go agin and isn't warranted).

Thanks. The car is still under Ext warranty. The first time I brought it in cuz it was doing it once in a while they said it was a ground issue and fixed it but now its on all the time so Ill see what they come up with Thursday when they look at it.

The dealer came up with the problem and it was the EBCM module that was internaly shorted. Its under warranty so there just going to replace it with a new one. In the future if this happens again and isnt under warranty ill go through that company to replace it.

Thanks, Bob.

Just a little heads up on the DIC codes. I printed off all the codes that my C5 can produce and put it in a small 3 ring binder along with some other papers like my carfax report and options listed/avilable on the car. I got these all of websites. I also included in that book the directions to retrieve the DIC codes, so the information is all there to do the diagnostics. I keep this book as part of my emergency road kit. It could really come in handy, at least you know more about what is going on than just sitting there. - Ron

I've done the same thing, Ron. I also keep copies of repair receipts and my warranty contract in mine. If nothing else it will make for interesting reading if I'm ever waiting for a tow. :chuckle

Ron, can you point me to a website that has the correct codes that a C5 can cut? I've got a copy, but it says that a C1225 code is for excessive right front wheel spin, and C4C5Specialist says that this code is for the LEFT front. So..........my question is.......how many more codes on my list are wrong? That's why i"d like to know where to go to get a list of codes that are ALL correct. Thanks in advance for any help you can provide.

I see you're online now, I'll get that for you in the next few minutes. - Ron

Okay, I've checked the Official GM Mechanics Manual for my 2000 and a C1225 is defined as "DTC C1225 LF Excessive Whell Spin Variation.' That would be Left Front I believe. The conditions for setting this are:

The DTC can be set at anytime the brake is not depressed and no wheel speed sensor hardware DTCs are present, and the EBCM sees a wheel speed variation of move than 14 KM/h /9 mph for 2.5 seconds.

The manual says that it is very important that a thorough inspection of the wiring and connectors be performed. Failure to carefully and fully inspect wiring and connections may result in misdiagnosis causing part replacement with reappearance of the malfunction.

An intermittent malfunction can be caused by poor connections, broken insulation, or wire that is broken inside the insulation

If an Intermittent malfunction exists, refer to intermittents and porr connections in the Wiring Systems manual. If you email me directly (schmaltz.r@verizon.net), I can send you a scan of the diagnosis and analysis steps that are included in the GM manual. I hope this helps

Thanks for the link, I'll print it off when I get home. I'm in San Diego right now on vacation. Ain't printin nothing for awhile! c4c5specialist also gave me the correct part number for the wiring harness that's the most likely suspect, so it looks like I've got a little work cut out for me the next ti,e I get to see my car (probably November).

Finally the issue has been resolved it was the ABS pump module the whole time.
