Hi everyone.I had called for a 2001 convertible a while back and the owner just called me back asking if I was still interested. My problem is that the car does not have the 3.15 gears and it has the base suspension.I am wondering if there is a big difference between the two suspensions...regular versus sport.I have the sport one on my 92 convertible and I find it to be a little hard( It could also be that I am getting too old to enjoy the sport suspension like I used to).I am seriously thinking of buying this car but the seller has lowered the price drastically and I am wondering if it is due to the suspension and differential. This car has 7 300 kilometers and still smells new.I would have preferred the 3.15 gears but I can live with the 2.73.....as for the suspension,I am worried that I won't enjoy the feeling of the base suspension. Can anyone help???Thanks in advance!

Hi there,
The Z51 or sport suspension in c5 is more comfortable than the soft ride on the c4 body style anyday.
I do NOT believe that you will have an issue with it.

base suspension

Thanks for the info. What I wanted to know was if the "soft" suspension( base suspension) was good enough and if it made a huge difference compared to the sport suspension.I am looking at a 2001 covertible with base suspension base differential(2:73) and NO Headsup display. The car has 3000 miles and still smells like new.The owner has lowered the price drastically and I am wondering if it is because of the missing options. Will it have a considerable drop in resale value in a few years because of the missing options??...thanks in advance.

Althought I personaly have not had the opertunity to ride in a Corvette with the sport suspension I can tell you I had the same questions concerning the base suspension.

Because it was so hard finding a Corvette with the Z51 suspension I decided I no longer cared and bought one with the base suspension.

personaly I love it. I read somewhere that even the base suspension on the C5 is as good or better then the C4 sport suspension.

Also you can easily upgrade your shocks and sway bars to give you a level exceeding the Z51 suspension if you decide it's not enough, which I am actually looking into doing.

If you are going to do autocross or road racing you may need to stiffen things up. I have a 2001 Coupe with Z51 and it rides hard enough to occasionally make the CD skip. If your going to just cruise then I wouldn't worry about it. If you get it cheap enough you can always upgrade the rear end gearing later on. My feeling is that you should drive it and judge it by the seat of your pants not a spec sheet. If it is straight and the price is right then buy it.

I had the same questions and went for the car with the stock suspension. Due to terminal MOD fever, I'm still considering the upgrade to Z51 sways and shocks. But realistically, for 99% of my driving this suspension rocks. Even autocrossing, I found the suspension responded pretty well and was only hindered by the tires. That would be the case with the Z51 package also. On the roads where I live, the stiffer suspension would be too harsh and if I need to tighten up the transitional handling for autocross, sways would do that without stiffening the ride on the back roads. I agree, that riding in both and deciding based on your driving need is the best way to go.

Cheers,
Carmen
