2001 problems

Have had more than my share of problems with a 2001 Coupe I began to lease 4/2001. At 3500 miles the oil pump went....at 7000 the car caught fire while I was driving it in city traffic. GM said fire due to oil leak and refused to take car back (Our fire expert said fire due to faulty fuel line on top of block, consistent with damage to firewall) At 10500 miles engine noise developes which took dealer four tries to correct(replaced tensioner...then belt...then pulleys) thirteen days after GM inspected the car again engine noise returned........but AC didn't......also upper oil pan leaking again AND lost brakes temporarily while stopping at light.....dream of again owning a Vette is now a nightmare....worse......noone in Detroit seems to care...keep dealing with low level customer reps who say they'd be upset too and would want another car but can't get anyones ear in Detroit despite several letters to John Smith....anyone have suggestions on who to contact to avoid litigation???.

As a California attorney I am unfamilar with the laws in your state . In Calif. we have a lemon law that covers new and , in some cases, if you paid for the warranty, used cars. I hope you have been documenting each and every communication with the dealership. I also trust that each warranty claim has been, in writing, and you have the written proof.. Any letters you have sent them should have had a copy retained by you.. Calif. law is specific as to how many times the vehicle has been repaired for the same defect(s). I trust Florida is the equivalent.. Find a competent "Lemon Law" attorney in your state and make an appointment with them. Make SURE you have all your paperwork in chronological sequence prepared before your appointment

I have had similar problems with my 2001 coupe. Is yours a Z06? Mine uses oil at 1 quart per thousand but has not cought fire as yet. I have gone nowhere with GM and the local dealers here in San Diego could care less. Sorry I can't give you any suggested course of action. Misery loves company.

GM put out a bulletin on this problem. All Vettes and V8 Camaros and Firebirds burn a quart of oil every 1000 to 2000 miles. You just have to keep checking and make sure the oil is full. Kind of sucks, but what can you do.

when my '98 (32k) has never had oil added? They may have had an acceptable use level like that at some time, but I've never hear of it and would never accept it. I started driving Chevrolet V8's the first year they came out (265) and out of 50 some of them over the years I had 2 bad ones and it wasn't from oil usage.

I'm not trying to be a pain here but, all Corvettes and V8 Camaros and Firebirds do not burn a quart of oil every 1000 to 2000 miles, nor should they.

GM issued a bulletin on oil consumption for 1 quart in 2000 as acceptable.
LS1 class engines do use some oil, as do most of the engines that develop higher horsepower.
You are looking at a basic Nascar engine, in a street car.
Dependent on driving style, and habits, this can use more oil or less.

Ok, I guess I am being a pain here because I still think that the LS1 "CAN" use a quart of oil in 2,000 miles and still be an acceptable engine to GM. It doesn't mean that it "WILL" use “ANY” in the 2,000 mile marker that GM has set. I will restate what I tried to say before, that it is an acceptable use level not a predictable level of oil useage.

I also think you are right on when you say that oil usage depends on driving style, and the ability to know what you can do with an engine and have it survive. One of the worst things I see people do is down shift to slow a car down because it looks/sounds cool. On the track, OK, when you have a set of inexpensive brakes to do that job, use them.

If I had a new car that used a quart of oil in 1,000 miles or less I would be a fixture on the dealers nose until it was corrected. Of course I would have to be honest with myself and the dealer about why it was using that much oil, like, was it 1/4 mile at a time. But then why tell that when you can blame GM, right?

Best post yet on oil consumption. My 2001 LS1 also uses oil at about 1 quart per 1500 miles.. I'm keeping carefull records, listing the "issue" on each visit to the dealer, and living with it.. """"""""It is a high performace engine...""""""""""" Carry a quart of Mobile One in the trunk, keep a close eye on the dip stick, listen for the slight change in idle noise and understand that a performace engine will "consume" oil..
