2005 GTO or C4 Corvette?

The only thing that really turned me off was the exterior design. It just doesn't impress me at all. Unless you recognize the GTO emblem you don't know what it is. I'd rather stick with my ZR1 even over the C5's. The new ones are comfortable but I like the feeling when you drop yourself into the seat. It really makes you feel like you're part of the car as opposed to passenger (driver), and I have driven them.

GTO all the way much better car then the c4 vett. And you will get more for your money. And more back at the end. C4 are not your best vetts.

I'm not sure I agree with that. The current GTO should be a better car, after all it is/has newer technology and 10 years newer. The C4 was worlds ahead of anything in it's time. Does this change the decision of the original poster? Probably not, it's like comparing apples and oranges. How much money do you want to spend?

Could come true, but I think history will show that Corvettes will retain their value. And I really like my Vette.

SHOULD BE BANNED!!!!!:r
He owns a ugly butt C5
As to the GTO some guy decided that he could take me on the top end this fall when I was on I69 coming home from a car show.
Apparently he thought that my old 89 was still stock. BIG MISTAKE on his part .
Boy it is fun to blow the doors off of those new cars with a 17 year old car.

Hi All,
Over here in Australia (where the GTO) comes from, they are quite popular. We have the original 4 door sedan from Holden which is called a Commodore. The GTO is just the 2 door version of that. Most of us Corvetters here just laugh and say that they are only 2 door Commodores anyway. They are certainly no match for any Corvette in the looks department. However as far as technology goes, they would certainly be better than a C4 BUT they still aren't a Corvette. They don't and never will have the personality of a Corvette.
Just my thoughts,
George.

Of course, you'd get more for your money right now. But are we talking about the same GTO's that, despite having the mighty LS2 and 2006 technology all over it, owners are now desparately trying to sell for $24-25K when they bought them new for $32K just a year or two ago?

Are we talking about the LS1 GTO's that people can't sell for $20K which the original owners paid $32K for less than 3 years ago?

While it's not a direct comparison, we can possibly, roughly estimate the value down the line for GTO's right now by using the F-body figures. I see F-bodies selling regularly for the low teens and some of those are even the LS1 F-bodies. I see LT1 and especially LT4 'Vette's selling for more than those F-bodies.

If you don't believe the GTO figures, check out the GTO websites. Some of those guys are still hallucinating by thinking they can sell their cars for $28K but most people bring them back to reality. Sorry, I like the GTO and I'm going to get one sometime next year, but I can't lie and say that those things will hold any value.

To me, it's like they stuffed an LS2 in a Grand Prix. And no offense to the Grand Prix, I own a GT model myself...

That would be the same GTO's. Which if that is what we are basing things on:

In January 2005 I bought my first Z06. It was a 2002 Z06 with 28k miles. I paid 32k for it. The 02 Z06 stickered for low to mid 50's. So figure 20-23k lost in a span of 3 years.

I got rid of it a few months later when I bought my house.

My latest 02 Z06 I bought at the beginning of this year (March). It had just under 31k miles, and cost 31k. It had roughly 6k in bolt-ons, of which you never get your money back out of. But regardless, thats 6k more that I didn't have to spend.

Thats still a huge drop from what they cost new. More than whats happened to the GTO so far.

A lot of folks that post numerous negative messages about the newer GTO have never even sat in one. And as well, there are some folks that have driven them that will still critisize them. But there are even more that have actually taken the time to drive one that will praise them.

Many say it doesn't look like what a GTO should. How, exactly, should a GTO look? Like a 2 door, 4 seat sedan with a big V-8 and optional standard transmission with sporty handling yet copious amounts of civility?

The original GTO was based off the Tempest, hardly an extreme car in its time. Seems to me they got the GTO theme perfect in this latest rendition.

Some have posted that just the other day they smoked a GTO in their vette. Was that with 3 friends along for the ride? The GTO was never designed to replace the vette. They are two totally different markets. The fact that the new GTO can even compete in the same arena as the C-4, given what it was designed for, is a testament to how great an automobile it actually is.

Go test drive one if you haven't before. For what it was designed to be, and for what it is capable of, I have no doubt you'll be impressed. If you go in thinking its a Ford GT, Dodge Viper, Porsche 911, Ferarri, or Lambo fighter, then you've already got the blinders on even before you start.

Wait, I should've noted that I have an ulterior motive for wanting GTO's to go down in price: I'm going to get one next year! :L

But the samples I've seen are very low mileage samples, usually less than 15K miles. Over the long run, I still think the Corvette would hold better. But even as well as the Corvette would hold, it'll still have the stigma of an American car and they usually don't hold as well as the foreign cars.

I'm looking forward to getting one next year. A 400 hp daily driver isn't too shabby. :D Ideally, I would like to get one that already has my desired mods on it: headers, exhaust, tints, intake and shifter. That way, I won't have to do them myself and I would get the mods for penny's on the dollar.

There was only one thing that disappointed me with the GTO: no heated seats.

I was driving to work this morning and was passed by a brand new Black GTO. The guy was zipping in and out of traffic, and I got to thinking. 400 hp, a 6 speed transmission, and a back seat all of the sudden seemed real appealing. Was I having a momentary loss of my senses? Would a 2005 GTO be considered an upgrade over a C4 Corvette (regardless of model year)? Just wondering what everybody else thought.

Nick

In the number of seats? Yes.
Acceleration? Yes.
Attitude? No.

Questions?:L

Dude get a clue!!!! your bashing the 4 and that ish aint cool!!! I like many could own a 5 but wanted a 4.The 4 is the car I grew up seein on the TV and streets and the one I've grown to love.Hell my dealer let me take a 01 C-5 home for the weekend and monday I took it back a 10.30am and was driving the C-4 home by lunch!!! If ya gonna bash the 4 get out of our section. You must be a noob!!!! You dont know any better.:eyerole

I guess when I started this post a year and a half ago that I should have rephrased my question. What I should have asked was, "Would a 2005/6 GTO make a nice sporty daily driver with a backseat to put in the garage with a C4 Corvette?"

I know that I sometimes miss having a backseat in the Corvette. I used to have a 1999 Camaro Z28. It had a backseat. I never actually put people in the backseat (who would fit comfortably?), but it was nice to have it there to throw the occasional item from the store or luggage on a trip, etc. With the new Camaro hitting the market in a few years, maybe that will be another option for a somewhat affordable, powerful car with a backseat.

Having read a lot of this thread, I will say it is true that the Corvette has more of a "Wow" factor with most people than a GTO. Even at 10 years old and two generations of Corvette later, I am always amazed at the reactions that my Corvette gets from people (not to say that it is more special or well kept than any other Corvette). I guess that I tend to look at it as a ten year old car that I obsess over, while others simply see it as a Corvette. People don't seem to care what year, generation, or body style that it is. It is a Corvette. No one ever asks me how much horsepower it has (well, sometimes). They might ask me what year it is, but they always walk away saying that it is a nice Corvette. Regardless of year, a Corvette seems to strike an image in the minds of people and generate a feeling that other "normal" cars do not. I never noticed this until I owned a Corvette and neighbors and co-workers that I barely spoke to wanted to see the "new" Corvette. Because of this mystique [An aura of heightened value, interest, or meaning surrounding something, arising from attitudes and beliefs that impute special power or mystery to it.] that seems to surround a "Corvette", I think that a Corvette of any year will stand a better chance of avoiding the junk yard and holding a decent resale value for its age than newer GTOs will. Nothing against the newer GTOs, they are nice cars (too bad the general public never recognized this by buying them), but they don't have the history, following, and mystique of a Corvette.

Sorry for the length. I just started typing and couldn't seem to stop.

I wouldn't take a GTO over an LT4 Corvette, but I'd easily take one over oh, say, a Mustang GT.

Go for the GTO, I feel it's got more to offer.

Absolutely you're entitled to your opinion, and everyone on this board realizes that. There's nothing to get defensive about in here.

By the way, welcome to the CAC. -John

I've driven the 400 pony GTO and it is a rocket ship. I've driven my son's LT-1 and he wouldn't stand a chance. A LT-4 would give him a run for his money, but those goats are one fast car. Handling has a lot to do with the driver. The Vette will always hold it's value longer and generally be more appealing to a sports car enthusiast. I'd still rather have Jr's 96CE even though the GTO is nice.

Defensive? Whose defensive? I think some of your friends here are being defensive according to some of the posts below in response to my opinion. Tell them not to get defensive. Not me young man.

Well, it is the C4 forum, so you have to expect a little bit of resentment!:)
But someone posted a question, you gave your opinion, and most of the people here respect it.

Like I said before, welcome, and I certainly wish I were still a young man!
