2007 black coupe
I have a 2007 black coupe with an orange peel problem. I contacted GM about this issue and they sent me to two different paint specialist. They both agreed that I did have moderate to heavy orange peel on the car. I was told by GM that this is how they are painting the vette now so that the paint will not crack later on. I looked at a couple of other new vettes and did notice a degree of orange peel on them also. My 2001 did not have any orange peel at all. So, my question is ... am I getting a runaround from GM or is this indeed how the normal paint job should look on a 2007 vette? I can't believe that this could be acceptable.

My 05 vette, and lots of other vettes of all years(c6's),have the O.P issue.Lots of ZAINO,or whatever wax you choose seems to help a little.A body shop will run you around 300-500 bucks to get the peel out.

orange peel problem

One of the paint experts that GM sent me to said that he would try to use a fine sandpaper to get rid of the orange peel but didn't want to go to far because I will loose to much clear coat and then the paint will not hold up to the elements as good as it should????
Any thoughts

If they had any experts, maybe they wouldn't have OP which to me equates to a bush league paint job. Sorry, no excuse for OP any way you look at it.:mad

What is orange peel? Never heard of it.

Orange peel is the characteristic of auto paint that looks "rumply" or like the peel of an orange rather than looking perfectly smooth which would be better. Because of pollution standards, the car manufacturers are no longer allowed to use oil based paints and the water based paints naturally produce more orange peel. On a show car, after the paint is completely dry and cured, the car is sanded with very fine wet sandpaper and then re-buffed to remove ALL orange peel. Normal waxing over time will help get rid of it also but not completely.:beer

orangepeel

My 2007 had lots of orangepeel in the paint, We wet sanded it &rudded it out .It looks great now

Orange peel is typical in C6 cars. The darker the color, the easier it is to see. Notice the color of the cars in the top 2 posters...

The only way to fix the "lumps" is to remove them. Zaino will have zero effect. (In fact, it'll make it more noticable!)

If it really bothers you that much, just get the car buffed and reshot w/clear coat. Should be able to get it done for <$1000.

My 2007 also has some OP. the ridgid parts like the rear deck and hood, doors and roof are perfectly smooth, but has the peel on the nose, fender and rear bumber cover, luckly it is silver and not the noticable. I do not have the stones to have it sanded out.

I took it to A custom paint shop in Lodi ca. He wet sanded the Whole car.It was hard to watch them doing the sanding. It took about 4Days It looks great

:upthumbs Now that I understand what it is, YES, BOTH my new Vettes ('09 and '10) have orange peel....I saw the thread before but thought orange peel was clearcoat coming off or sumthin....:chuckle thanks for educating me :w
:wDon't get me wrong, it's not real bad....my '04 Yukon had it too....but not quiet as what I see on Vette, but the colors are not same either....both of my Vette have the tint-coat paint where Yukon did not.
