I have a set of stock 3/8 rods for my 30 over 454. I plan on replacing the rod bolts with ARP's and I am going to have the entire rotating assembly ballanced. It has been recommended to me that I polish the sides of the rods and remove the casting marks. I have done this to one rod already but want to make sure I have not weakened the rod. I used a grinding wheel to take of the casting on the beam of the rod. Then I used a dremel and paddel wheel to buff it out. I only took off enogh metal to level the side of the rod. Is this OK?

Thanks
Wade

the big thing this does is reduce the stress risers caused in the casting process. pro builders usually shot peen them as its quicker. smooth makes them look good and perform great and enhance the strenth ..... good luck .

it is a good move what you've done. i would personally junk the stock the 3/8" rod bolts and opt for the much stronger 7/16" version. running up to 1 hp per cu/in, the stock 3/8" will work, but going beyond that i would opt for the added insurance. Brian
