I'm not the best at identifying engines and was wondering if there is a way by looking a the engine of a '65 to '67 and be able to tell whether is a 327 or 427.

Without going into a lot of details... The Valve Covers .... Look at the Valve Covers ;) The 327 look like regular valve covers, the 427 and Big Blocks Look like they are hiding HP under them :D

Next car show near you try to get to it, and check out the Chevy's and you'll see Right Away the difference..

Welcome aboard CACC! Bud makes great suggestion to visit car shows ... look & ask questions.

Small Block Chevy (ie 283, 302, 305, 327, 350, 400) have distinctly rectangular valve covers with four (4) hold-down bolts ... two across the top (intake side) and two across the bottom (exhaust side).

Big Block Chevy (ie 366, 396, 402, 427, 454, 502) valve covers are larger than sbc and slightly more oval (more gentle radii at corners) at the front & back ends. BBC vc's have seven (7) hold-down bolts ... three across the top and four across the bottom.

Also, BBC has a small, short water hose that connects very top-front-center of water pump to very top-front-center of intake manifold ... SBC has no such hose.

Most (if not all) BB vette in 1965 came with 396 ... most (if not all) BB 66 & BB 67 vette came with 427.

Also...The obvious...The hoods have bulge for the 396-427's...I do prefer the small blocks...
