When you pre-assemble to check for grinding/clearancing ... use OLD bearings and an OLD timing chain ... grinding dust will ruin new bearings & new chain. Of course you'll check with your new 383 crank ... and new cam ... but also check with whatever rods (& rod bolts) you'll end up with (check clearance from cam lobes) ... best to use an OLD piston too ... even though a 350 piston'll stick up above the deck about 1/8" ... doesn't matter ... what does matter is pin centered in bore. But, if your new pistons have offset pins then you must use one of the new pistons or one with same pin offset ... this fitment stage is where floating pins are about only advantage in a street motor. Have new cam installed/degreed in as you pre-assemble ... the 4 degrees or so it may need to be advanced can easily be enough to cause clearance issue between rod & lobe. BTW ... Spare .250" double roller chain for the 3100 set is Speed-Pro (sealed power) P/N 222-3DR58 or Cloyes P/N 9-130 or Clevite P/N C4012 or Perfect Circle P/N 94012.goingballistic said:Quick update: Ordered a custom grind Extreme cam from Comp, timing chain (true roller 3100) and 812-16 lifters. Just ordered a SCAT crank with clevitte bearings as an assembly for $240. Next step install the rotating assembly and check all clearances, grind what I need off and then prep the block for the machine shop for decking to zero.
