I've got a couple of friends at work, each has a 283 sitting in there garage complete, never rebuilt and one of them will sell his but, I was also thinking of buying A 350 crate motor. I have A 305 now.

Nevermind, I heard you could pull alot of HP out of a 283 and you could run high RPM's & it's lighter.

You could get a lot more out of a 350 crate engine.
I'd only stick with a 283 for originality purposes, which you obviously aren't concerned with.
The weight difference between a 283 and a 350 would be negligible.

The 283 would be fine if you were working on any of the Chevy products 66 or earlier any body, and you wanted originality. On a Vette, after 68, stay with the 350, for a minimum! Go with a crate motor if you're looking for something for your 80. (If you can work it, try to put EFI in it, for the carbureted engines from the late 70s and later were a real bear to keep up with all the EPA/CARB mandated controls.
Use the 305 only as a last resort, they were notorious for bad lifters....

there are several old tome true statements along that line basically it means bigger is bettercds480 said:

I run a 383 which was made from stuffing a esrly 70's 400 Crankshaft in a .030 overbored 350 block (bored and stroked) and the difference is amazing
Now a days you can even buy a 383 from GM they have become so popular
a larger engine can be built milder and still get the same performance as a smaller wild engine.
Yes you can build a 283 that will scream, but it will not be as practical as a larger milder engine.
