Grrr.. Just got a 383 stroker built, 10.5:1 compression, dual quads, and during the 500 mile break in i checked the oil and was down 2 quarts at 300 miles (I have a 7 quart pan). The machine shop swears all 7 quarts were there. They drained my oil today again, and refilled it, and checked for leaks. nothing. There is smoke for a second on start up from drivers side. They believe that too much gas is being dumped in. I had the same dual quads on my previous 350 small block. He says it is running too fat. he said if it keeps losing oil, no leaks, that he will have to replace the valve guides in the heads again, but if there is a strong gas smell to it, it is carb/intakes. WTF. Why wouldn't it have done the same thing on my stock 350? It is a VERY reputable shop. GRRR

IMHO,Gas in the oil is most likely rings, not valve seals.

As the valves are closed on the compression stroke, the passage between the combustion chamber and heads is closed and wouldn't push gas back though the valve guides.
At the intake stroke, the cylinders are under vacuum and also would not be pushing gas back past the valve guides.
My 02 cents.

I agree, valve guides/seals would give you that plume of blue oil smoke out the tail pipe/s on start up and for a few seconds whenever you step on it.

Not sure on this, but wouldn't to much gas in the combustion chamber or unburned fuel be actually washing the oil from the cylinder walls, and also burning the oil it is mixing with? Also hurting the breakin process with the diluted oil in the cylinders. Maybe someone with more experience on HP motor will chime in on this one, but I would be very careful till you find out what is going on!

Just my two cents worth, but if the motor uses the mechanical fuel pump and the pump has an internal leak wouldn't that gas go into the oil pan? Is it possible to have a mixture that rich and the motor still runs without fouling out the plugs after very little time? Also, if the carbs were dumping enough gas to dilute the oil so it either burns and or evaporates wouldn't it put out alot of black smoke due to unburnt fuel?

I feel REALLY stupid right now... I took a reading right after I drove the car 140miles. I didn't even think about waiting 10-15 minutes for all the oil to go back into the pan... I checked this morning, and oil level is just fine. DUH =( It can't be dumping gas into the cyclinders, first fill up I got 12.2mpg and didn't really spell gas on dipstick. This fill-up, same route driven, all expressway 140miles, 14.88mpg. So, I am pretty sure it isn't just dumping it in there now. It is running fat, so maybe a little bit is going down, who knows. Talk about egg on the face for the oil thing though. Grrr.. Well, better to look like a fool vs. being down that much oil, that soon, lol.
